Job overview

This post is a replacement substantive position. The appointment will be a part-time (2 PA) Specialist grade doctor in Sexual Health, with a potential for a whole-time post when the current post holder retires in April 2026, based at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.

The appointee will be working towards DFSRH and / or STIF intermediate, along with gaining significant experience in provision of contraception and/or genitourinary medicine. Letters of Competence in Intrauterine Techniques and/or Subdermal Implant techniques are desirable but training can be provided.

It is expected that the appointee will deliver clinics in integrated sexual health. Clinics will consist of booked appointments and drop in attendances (subject to covid restraints), working alongside sexual health nurses (advanced nurse practitioners and band 6 nurses working to PGD), health care assistants delivering asymptomatic STI screening and providing support to clinicians and other sexual health doctors. .

There is no direct in-patient responsibility with this post.

The appointee will be expected to work with the multidisciplinary team to identify clinical governance and training needs. This may involve involvement in the development of local training programmes to support staff attain appropriate FSRH or BASHH accreditation.


Main duties of the job

The post-holder will undertake

· History taking, examination, investigation and treatment of patients attending the Genitourinary Medicine department in line with clinic protocols.

· Supporting the department in the management of patients with HIV disease.

· Working in line with all Trust policies and procedures and the GU clinic guidelines.

· Keep up to date with clinic guidelines, good medical practice and safeguarding guidelines.

· Participation in the internal educational activities of the department, including teaching nurses, medical students, junior doctors and other visitors to the department, as appropriate.

· Participation in the external educational activities, including meetings and courses hosted by the department and other courses such as the BASHH STIF course, HIV Masterclass and DFSRH as appropriate.

· Participation in audit and clinical governance activities of the department.

· Providing medical support to non-medical staff of the clinic.

· Performance of administrative tasks relevant to Genitourinary Medicine (such as writing of letters to colleagues and patients, compiling GUMCAD data, development of clinic protocols).

· Clinical liaison with other hospital departments, general practitioners and other agencies as required.

· Participation in the developing clinical networks within Genitourinary Medicine in the West Midlands.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is for a Specialty Doctor for 2 PAs per week, with a potential for a whole-time post when the current post holder retires in April 2026, based in the Department of HIV & Genitourinary Medicine, Manor Hospital, Walsall. The post provides an exciting opportunity to develop a career in Sexual Health and will be a key part of the medical establishment within the department. Depending on the interests of the post-holder, there is an opportunity to gain experience in HIV Medicine and also in contraception.


Person specification


Qualifications

1. MB ChB and full registration with GMC
2. Higher qualification desirable DRCOG, DFSRH


Skills and Aptitudes

3. Ability to take a sexual history and undertake appropriate genital examinations and investigations
4. Evidence of good communication skills during clinical consultation-interpersonal and language skills
5. Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligibility in written and spoken English
6. Competent to work without direct supervision
7. Maintain contemporaneous, accurate notes
8. Ability to record all data on electronic patient record during each consultation
9. Intrauterine Device/System and Implant insertion


Knowledge and Experience

10. Excellent general medical skills Four years post registration
11. Experience in GU Medicine or equivalent


Key Competencies

12. Ability to manage patients with sexually transmitted infections
13. Managing patients requiring all types of contraception
