Science Correspondent – Royal Society of Chemistry
Join the Chemistry World news team on a full‑time temporary basis (expected to be 12 months). In this role you will report on the latest developments, discoveries and trends in the chemical sciences, creating engaging content across multiple platforms for an international audience of chemical scientists.
Salary: 36,796 GBP per annum.
Hybrid working: the position is contractually based at our Cambridge office but you may work from home within the UK with occasional office attendance. Travel to conferences and events, domestic and international, will be routine. Flexible working arrangements may be discussed in your application.
Key Responsibilities
* Source, investigate, write and edit up‑to‑the‑moment news and feature stories on trends, developments and discoveries in the chemical sciences.
* Build and maintain a network of contacts to identify compelling stories.
* Attend conferences, press conferences, visit companies and institutions, and conduct interviews ensuring diversity wherever possible.
* Research and write news stories and features on a wide range of chemical science–related topics with high accuracy and quality, meeting agreed deadlines.
* Stay abreast of current developments in chemistry, the chemical industry, science policy and matters relating to chemists.
* Plan story concepts and determine the focus of individual articles, developing story ideas for the magazine.
* Edit, proofread and prepare pages of the print edition.
* Participate in videos, blogs and podcasts on a regular basis.
Qualifications and Skills
* Degree‑level qualification in a scientific field (chemical sciences preferred).
* Demonstrable experience of pitching, developing and writing stories on a range of scientific topics in a journalistic style, with excellent attention to detail.
* Self‑starter with motivation to find and investigate ideas for stories develop contacts and sources.
* Good knowledge of the latest themes and developments in the chemical sciences and the wider chemistry community.
* Good time‑management and organisation skills to deliver assignments and workload across short‑ and long‑term projects and competing priorities.
