NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. The role:

The role is the post holder is to work within the nursing and multi-professional team to ensure a high standard of person-centred care to a defined patient group. Competently perform the necessary technical/invasive/physical/psycho-social aspects of care for this defined patient group. This person will ensure an effective delivery of nursing care is provided to patients and that an acceptable standard is maintained. They will provide, through Divisional policies, a safe environment for the treatment of patients and protection of staff. The post holder will participate in Practice Development Programmes as required. The postholder is required to demonstrate flexibility by working shifts within a service which runs over 24hrs and a 7 day week. Expected where necessary to engage in multi-site working within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde in order to achieve the needs of the service.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

* We are looking to recruit enthusiastic Band 5 Theatre Practitioners on a fixed term contract, to our diverse perioperative team based within Gartnavel General Hospital
* The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday, 10 hour shifts
* Please note this is a fixed-term contract for 12 months


Key responsibilities:

* To assess patient needs, plan/implement and evaluate a programme of person-centred care which is evidence based utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and ensure involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others
* Maintain patient records in line with NMC/HPC guidelines for records and record keeping
* Practice within the legal & Ethical framework as established by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) Health professions council [HPC]and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and well being are met
* Work within the National Health Service (NHS), NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures
* Contribute to the provision of an appropriate learning environment in line with NES Quality Placement Standards
* Complete clinical appraisal of pre-registration nurses and health care support staff
* Participate in performance appraisal in line with policy
* Organise own time and that of junior staff and learners, providing an effective leadership role
* Ensures effective day-to-day management of other resources including stores supplies, pharmacy and maintenance of equipment
* Regularly lead a team of nurses and operating department practitioners and support the Multidisciplinary team
* In conjunction with the SCN/Deputy ensure that the staff resource is utilised efficiently and effectively by managing duty roster/ sickness absence and the use of additional hours i.e. bank
* Contribute to the recruitment and selection process


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

* First Level Registered Nurse on NMC register (Part 1, 7 and 12)
* OR Registered Operating Department Practitioner on HPC register
* Ability to work shifts required to provide the service including night duty and public holidays
* Ability to work on any site within GG&C when required
* Recent experience within an operating theatre or immediate postoperative recovery room environment (HDU experience and experience during training may be relevant)
* Post registration qualification relevant to perioperative care

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
