Are you interested in helping build permanent, decent homes for the 3,000 children and families suffering homelessness in Brighton and Hove? That’s what Mission HOME is fighting for.
What difference will you make?
You will support Mission HOME’s fight against homelessness in Brighton by advising on planning rules, identifying microsites, and engaging with the Council. Your expertise could help secure land for homes, housing dozens of families, and setting a UK precedent. By addressing systemic housing barriers, you’ll improve health and stability for vulnerable families.
What are we looking for?
The Volunteer Town Planning Advisor needs professional experience in town planning, with knowledge of UK planning laws, land use policies, and the planning landscape in Brighton and Hove. Strong communication skills for email, phone, and in-person interactions with the council are essential. Being highly organized and proactive is important for researching microsites and meeting campaign deadlines.
What will you be doing?
I’m Scarlett Chapman, 14, and I started this because it breaks my heart to see families stuck in cramped, temporary accommodations—sometimes for up to 15 years. I’ve raised over £10,000 for local homelessness charities through busking and have helped spread awareness via press, TV, and radio. We’re asking Brighton and Hove City Council to use unused land patches—microsites—for building council homes. You could play a big role in this! Join our team of volunteers and help convince the Council to free up land for homes, giving families a better future. "I’ve met families living in poor conditions. One mum, ‘Julie,’ told me they were given a place so bad they had to hoover mold off the walls. Her daughter kept getting lung infections—that shook me. That’s why we’re doing this." – Scarlett
