Overview

To provide an advanced level clinical pharmacy service to the Oncology & Haematology departments. To support pharmaceutical aspects of the clinical trials service at Bedford Hospital site. To support the Aseptics Team by monitoring and checking chemotherapy. To be an active member of the Oncology Pharmacy team and to help meet the overall strategic objectives of the team in the provision of pharmaceutical care for cancer and medical patients.

To provide an advanced level clinical pharmacy service under the direction of the Principal Pharmacist for Oncology, Haematology & Clinical Trials. Supporting the development, expansion and maintenance of oncology & haematology services to adult patients by undertaking clinical practice with a patient care service co-operating with medical and nursing personnel to optimise the pharmaco-therapeutic aspects of patient care.


Responsibilities

* Monitor prescriptions for haematology and oncology medicines and associated therapies to ensure safe, efficient and appropriate prescribing in accordance with Trust, regional and national guidelines, and NHS England prescribing requirements.
* Liaise with medical and nursing staff on the Primrose Oncology Unit, Haematology Department and the Day Treatment Unit (DTU).
* Monitor and check chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition products to appropriate standards after local training.
* Provide pharmaceutical care advice for cancer and general medical patients to patients, relatives and health professionals including senior consultants.
* Ensure GMP is followed in pharmacy Aseptics and maintain monitoring and record-keeping.
* Assist in training pharmacists to clinically verify chemotherapy prescriptions and check chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition products as required by the Principal Pharmacist Oncology, Haematology & Clinical Trials.
* Promote multidisciplinary working with medical and nursing colleagues and report in Oncology Business Meetings.
* Participate in Aseptics/Haematology/Oncology training, audits and drug usage reviews as required.
* Provide period end reports relating to activity for the Principal Pharmacist Oncology, Haematology & Clinical Trials.
* Prepare and submit applications for new haematology/oncology SACT or funding requests to the Drugs & Therapeutics Committee/NHSE; process and maintain SACT medicines via the Cancer Drugs Fund.
* Assist in providing monthly chemotherapy statistics and data for funding and CIU reporting; support the chemotherapy e-prescribing system (iQemo) including adding/reviewing protocols.
* Line management of a specialist pharmacist within Pharmacy Aseptics.
* Be GCP trained and support the Clinical Trials Service; participate in audits, drug budget analysis for new SACT drugs, and respond to new initiatives relevant to SACT.
* Provide supervision and support to Pharmacy staff involved in the ASU and promote safe medication use; contribute to the Pharmacy clinical risk programme.
* Screen/finally check clinical trial prescriptions for safety and accuracy according to trial protocols.
* Promote high quality, cost-effective prescribing in line with local and national guidelines.
* Undertake and participate in clinical audits, practice research and other projects; complete further Oncology/Clinical Trial training as needed (e.g., Diploma/MSc/Independent prescribing/GMP).
* Train and work as an Independent Prescriber according to Trust policies and scope of practice if required.
* Deputise for the Principal Pharmacist Oncology, Haematology & Clinical Trials if requested.
* Provide highly specialised pharmaceutical information and support to the multidisciplinary team; ensure timely medication reviews per protocols.
* Supervise, check and, where necessary, dispense medicines in accordance with safe systems of work and procedures.
* Fulfill professional responsibilities of a pharmacist under the General Pharmaceutical Council and meet registration, continuing education and CPD requirements.


Requirements / Qualifications

* Experience in cancer services, including aseptics and haematology/oncology.
* GCP training and ability to support Clinical Trials Service.
* Ability to work with Principal Pharmacist and teams on audits, budget impact analysis, and new initiatives related to SACT.
* Willingness to train supporting staff and students; participate in policy maintenance and CPD activities.


Additional Information

* Travel between hospital sites may be required; Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serves two busy sites in Bedford and Luton, with approx. 7,500 staff and a population of around 700,000.
* Probationary period of six months; vacancies may close early if a sufficient number of applications are received.
* Role suitable for individuals experienced in cancer services; the Trust offers training and development opportunities.
* All new staff will be subject to a probationary period; travel between hospital sites may be required.
