Job Summary An opportunity has arisen at the West Cornwall Hospital for an enthusiastic, motivated, and hardworking individual to join the porter/security team. This position requires flexibility to accommodate the needs of the service, good communication skills and a positive and professional attitude.

Job Responsibilities

Porter Related:

* Carry out tasks allocated by the porter or supervisor that are legal, safe and reasonable in an efficient and professional manner.
* Remain available to take on further tasks promptly from the termination point of the previous task.
* Remain within the hospital site while on duty and be flexibly positioned to support the service.
* Be sensitive and supportive to patients when carrying out duties.
* Ensure goods, equipment or other items arrive at the correct delivery point in good condition and on time.
* Carry out patient transfers to all wards and departments; assist ward staff with moving patients as required.
* Participate in the movement of deceased patients as required.
* Collect and deliver urgent and non-urgent specimens to laboratories from all wards/departments.
* Change medical gas cylinders and manage delivery checks (BOC).
* Assist with ward and office moves and decanting beds/furniture.
* Deliver linen to wards and carry radios, adhering to Trust radio protocol in sensitive areas.
* Be fully conversant in the use of equipment for lifting, handling and transporting patients.
* Perform duties that involve long periods of walking and moving bulky items; maintain physical fitness to meet service needs.
* Comply with Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and report accidents/incidents as required.
* Operate equipment safely and in line with Health and Safety requirements.
* Buddy new employees and undertake mandatory training as required.

Security Related:

* Carry out frequent patrols of the Trust site and property as directed by the Head of Security, following set procedures.
* Prevent, deter and detect incidents of theft or criminal damage; liaise with Police as necessary.
* Secure insecure premises and manage intruder alarms; investigate alarms and liaise with police as required.
* Engage with Estates helpdesk on security maintenance issues on NHS Trust property.
* Assist in preventing acts of violence or disorder; detain offenders using minimal force and hand over to police.
* Support medical and nursing staff in safe restraint or detention of patients as assessments are undertaken.
* Respond to intruder, lift and fire alarms as trained; monitor incidents until senior staff or emergency services arrive.
* Support staff during planned resolution meetings and ensure safety during these meetings.
* Remove trespassers and unauthorised persons from hospital property in line with policy.
* Record all incidents with appropriate detail to support investigation or action.
* Operate CCTV and related equipment as required; provide a key holding service for departments.
* Participate in Major Incident or Child Abduction Alerts within Trust procedures.
* Undertake applicable training for Health and Safety at Work, fire prevention, first aid, and restraint techniques.


Job Description (Security Related)

As above, including patrols, incident response, security of premises, liaison with Police, and record-keeping in accordance with Trust procedures.


Person Specification

Essential – Qualifications

* Standard Level General Education
* Ability to speak and write English to an appropriate standard
* Willing to attend and qualify as an NHS Security Accredited Security Officer within 3 months
* Must pass written test (not AI generated) and visual test

Desirable – Qualifications

* GCE/CSE/GCSE or equivalent
* Customer Service NVQ Level 3
* NAHS or Security Officer qualification or equivalent

Essential – Experience

* Experience dealing with the general public in a fast-paced, customer-oriented setting
* Willing to work a 24/7 shift service
* Experience in a physically and mentally demanding role
* Experience in a large, wide-area environment requiring high fitness
* IT literacy (Word, Excel, Outlook)

Desirable – Experience

* Experience working in a hospital environment
* Previous security in a complex organisation or uniformed service
* UK Security / Police or Military background

Essential – Practical & Intellectual Skills

* Physically fit
* Strong communication skills (written and oral)
* Organisational and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Ability to digest relevant legislation, guidance and current protocols

Desirable – Practical & Intellectual Skills

* IT skills for information input/output; familiarity with CCTV, MS Office, etc.
* Knowledge of First Aid, Health and Safety legislation, firefighting techniques
* Knowledge of criminal and civil law; control, restraint and breakaway techniques
* Experience in teaching/training groups and using CCTV control systems
* NAHS course or NVQ2-level security qualification

* Smart appearance, enthusiastic, reliable, diplomatic, honest and trustworthy
* Able to work as part of a team or on own initiative
* Calm, sympathetic nature
* Willingness to work any shift at short notice or in an emergency
* Evidence of personal development or training

* SIA Licence (held for more than 3 years)
* Experience with Body Worn Camera

* Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check required; post subject to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions Order) 1975
* Certificate of Sponsorship available for eligible skilled workers
