Job Summary
We are excited to offer the opportunity for a full‑time Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join our supportive and well‑established Community Older Person's Mental Health Department in Gateshead. We are seeking an enthusiastic, flexible, and resilient Occupational Therapist with sound clinical reasoning and a proven record of high‑quality care. The remit includes the cognitive pathway from early diagnosis to late stages of dementia for those over 65 and the Younger Persons with Dementia service. Our strategic objectives involve challenging discrimination and stigma, and championing recovery and inclusion for all.
The post holder will work in collaboration with the Occupational Therapy Team Lead and colleagues to deliver and shape services, with opportunities to develop clinical, service‑development, teaching and supervision skills.
Responsibilities
* Provide autonomous practice, offering specialised occupational therapy assessment and treatment for clients accessing the Community Older Person's Mental Health Service.
* Independently manage a caseload, using evidence‑based practice and patient‑centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
* Manage and supervise junior staff and students, supporting their training and development.
* Act as a key member of the multidisciplinary team, working across community and acute care settings, health and social care locations, and the patients' homes.
* Participate in service‑improvement initiatives and support delivery of the OT business plan as directed by Team/Service Lead.
* Maintain confidentiality and accurate record keeping as an autonomous practitioner.
* Deputise for the Band 7 Team Lead Occupational Therapist when required.
* Support the Principal Occupational Therapist in planning, coordinating and delivering services and in the development of service provision.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
* Registered with the Health Professions Council (HCPC) as an Occupational Therapist and maintain registration.
* Experience of multidisciplinary teamwork delivering a holistic, patient‑centred approach.
* Experience supervising students and support staff.
* Enthusiasm for and experience working with frail older people / OPMH.
* Full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle for work purposes.
* Evidence of knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of complex elderly patients or those with complex mental health conditions, utilising a holistic approach.
Desirable
* OPMH specific experience, including assessment tools and interventions.
* Member of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists.
* Understanding of NHS organisation.
* Experience of working within a Band 6 or Band 7 Occupational Therapy role (if applicable).
Technical Requirements
* A valid UK driving licence.
* Availability to travel to one of the Gateshead Health Locations as directed.
* Ability to perform Lone working safely and responsibly.
Benefits & Working Conditions
* Permanent full‑time contract.
* Band 6 salary: £38,682 to £46,580 per annum.
* Full time, 37‑40 hours per week with flexible pattern in the community service.
