Join a new International Research Project on Graphic Design and Creative Dissent

We’re looking for a Research Fellow in History of Design to join the international team responsible for the research project Graphic Design Histories for Creative Dissent: Archiving and Ethical Challenges (GDHCD) https://www.graphicdissent.rca.ac.uk. This project is supported by the Trans-Atlantic Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities and involves local teams in Brazil, South Africa and the UK.

You’ll be part of the UK team working closely with Dr Harriet Atkinson, Senior Lecturer, School of Humanities and Social Science and Centre for Design History at University of Brighton and Professor Teal Triggs, Postgraduate Research Lead, School of Communication at Royal College of Art. You will investigate visual communication used by UK communities of resistance, comparing it with Brazil and South Africa, and contribute to understanding how graphic languages express differing concepts of democracy and how UK archives can better preserve the cultural memory of these struggles.

* A PhD (or an equivalent level of professional experience) in an area of history, theory or practice central to the focus of the research project
* Experience of researching in or with graphic design, visual or material culture
* Sufficient, up to date breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques
* Experience of organising meetings and research events
* Experience of data collection and data analysis (including visual data) and data management
* Evidence of commitment to engage in continuous professional development including knowledge of methods for data management
* Understanding of equality of opportunity, academic content, issues relating to student need and commitment to ethical research practices
* Competent and relevant IT skills and ideally effective use of IT for teaching and learning

The appointment is for a fixed term of 24 months (0.2 FTE - 1 day per week) from 01/10/25 to 30/09/27 and you'll need to be able to work flexibly between the University of Brighton and the Royal College of Art, in person or online, as needed.

For further information about the role and the qualities we are looking for, please see the job description.
