Job description

About the role:
This role supports the Council’s Responsive Maintenance Service by delivering repair and maintenance work across domestic dwellings and other Council-owned assets. Duties include assessing reported issues, completing carpentry and general maintenance tasks, using Council systems, and working independently in occupied and void properties. The role also involves attending emergencies, participating in an out of-hours rota, working in varied conditions, and providing guidance and supervision to apprentices.
About you:
• A genuine commitment to helping tenants, showing patience, understanding, and professionalism when dealing with the public and colleagues.
• Strong ability to work independently and confidently, as well as collaboratively as part of a wider maintenance team.
• Skilled in carpentry/joinery with the flexibility to undertake basic tasks from other trades when required.
• Practical problem‑solving ability, including making cost‑effective decisions for long‑term repair solutions.
• Willingness to follow direction, work cooperatively with coordinating staff, and adapt to changing priorities or emergency situations.
• Preparedness for the practical demands of the role, including lone working, holding a full driving licence, completing a DBS check, and participating in an out‑of‑hours rota.
What you will do:
• Attend properties to assess reported repairs, determine appropriate remedial work, order materials, complete repairs, and update the coordinating team.
• Use Council systems to receive scheduled jobs, record completed work, and log additional tasks and materials.
• Carry out carpentry and general building maintenance, including emergencies, lone working in void properties, and undertaking basic tasks across other trades.
• Participate in the out‑of‑hours rota to make safe emergency issues and report further work required.
• Manage resources responsibly, including van stock, purchase card use, waste disposal, and daily vehicle checks.
• Support safe working practices and team development through supervising apprentices, completing tool calibration, site inductions, and maintaining risk assessments and method statements.
