Job description
Flexible Working: Full-time with a minimum of three days in the office. We know how important a good work/life balance is, which is why we offer home working – exact arrangements will be agreed with your line manager.
About Us
MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you'll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.
The Role
Our Estates team includes facilities management and sustainability specialists, space planners, engineers, business experts, external consultants and partner organisations. We deliver a whole life menu of estates advice and fit for purpose, sustainable, compliant working environments for critical business needs.
As our Estates Surveyor, you’ll collaborate with our team of professionals, providing estates advice while managing a diverse portfolio with a variety of tenure types. From managing budgets and forecasts to financial processes, you’ll keep on top of everything related to the portfolio. You’ll also contribute to our estate management processes including asset management planning and streamlining processes to make us more efficient.
Using consultants where appropriate, you’ll propose and deliver asset management plans and estate management, including acquisitions and disposals. Balancing sustainability best practice while responding to business needs, you’ll help us to deliver the most appropriate solution every time. And, managing landlord and tenant relationships, you’ll deliver rent reviews, lease and occupancy agreements and negotiate on occupancy issues while also taking ownership representation on neighbour issues.
About You
Adaptable, motivated, and collaborative, you enjoy solving problems and working with people to find a solution. You’re able to communicate detailed, technical information to non-technical audiences, tailoring the information to your audience. Your ability to influence people will be vital as you liaise with a wide range of customers and stakeholders.
You hold a Royal Chartered Institute of Surveyors (RICS) qualification – MRICS or FRICS, or are working towards these, or have an equivalent degree in real estate or facilities management. As well as demonstrating a high level of experience working in Property Asset Management and Estate Surveying, you’re up to date on current government legislation and RICS best practice.
Training and Development
Upon joining, you’ll be given full training on our bespoke systems as well as mentoring and coaching opportunities and both internal and external development opportunities. Together with your line manager, you’ll create a development plan and, if there’s a training course or opportunity relevant to your role that’s of interest to you, there’s a good chance we’ll fund it. We’ll also cover your RICS subscription or professional fees.
Rewards and Benefits
You’ll receive a starting salary (depending on your experience) from £61,666, plus other benefits including:
• 25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
• Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
• Dedicated Development Budget
• Interest-free season ticket loan
• Excellent pension scheme
• Cycle to work scheme
• Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars (at some locations)
• Paid parental and adoption leave.

At MI5 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
