Overview
Jacobs is hiring a Structures Inspector to join the team in Stevenage. You will help maintain the safety and integrity of Hertfordshire’s highway structures, leading inspections across assets from rural culverts to urban viaducts, and reporting their condition using digital tools. The role involves planning and carrying out site inspections and report writing, with hybrid working arrangements that allow part of the week to be spent working from home. A company vehicle will be provided for site work, and occasional overnight stays or travel to other UK locations may be required.
Responsibilities
* Lead and carry out General, Principal, and Special Inspections across the county and occasionally support other Jacobs projects, if required.
* Develop safe systems of work and plan inspections with colleagues and contractors.
* Mentor junior team members and check inspection reports.
* Proactively identify and report safety concerns affecting public infrastructure.
* Help drive innovation in how we deliver inspections and manage data.
What you'll need
* A strong commitment to safety and sustainability.
* Team player with strong communication, collaboration, and time management skills; good report writing skills, especially for Principal Inspections.
* Experience in highway structures inspections is ideal, but not essential – training will be provided.
* Background in civil engineering, highways supervision, surveying, or similar; an engineering-related qualification is beneficial.
* Knowledge of Bridge Inspection Standards and Codes of Practice is desirable; BICS certification is a strong advantage but not required.
* Familiarity with inspection databases (e.g., Confirm, BridgeStation) is a plus.
* Understanding of small maintenance schemes is advantageous.
* Willingness to attend training courses (e.g., CSCS, Working in Water).
* Full UK driving licence is essential.
* Flexibility for occasional overnight work and travel outside Hertfordshire.
