Project Overview
Sellafield Pile Fuel Cladding Silo (PFCS) is one of the most hazardous buildings in Western Europe. Commissioned in 1952 to safely store radioactive cladding, the project aims to retrieve, re‑package, and permanently dispose of decades‑old waste. The system includes shielded access doors, a robotic waste retrieval arm, transporters, and repackaging plants.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Project Field Engineer, the Mechanical Field Engineer provides technical support to ensure works are completed according to the programme, approved design drawings, and specifications. The role is designated as part‑time telework, requiring at least three days of in‑person attendance per week at the assigned office or project site.
Major Responsibilities
* Support and coordinate subcontract field activities and site management on contract‑administration related tasks.
* Initiate requisitions for field purchases and prepare quantity take‑offs of purchased material and equipment.
* Track progress of assigned subcontracts and provide input to project schedules and cost reports.
* Ensure zero‑accident philosophy and safety requirements are implemented and adhered to by craft and others in the operational area.
* Maintain housekeeping, cleanliness, and material quality, ensuring workmanship meets quality requirements based on codes, specifications, and design drawings.
* Plan and execute work methods safely and ensure compliance with contract documents.
* Proactively pursue continuous learning and provide technical administration and supervision of assigned subcontracts.
* System Turnover Coordination:
o Coordinate with construction management on priorities and strategies for subcontracted work.
o Schedule walk‑downs and validate punch lists for the scope.
o Ensure inspection records are completed and submitted.
o Coordinate with direct‑hire supervision.
* STR/Subcontract Coordinator:
o Review and approve inspection test plans and subcontractor submittals.
o Develop daily reports of subcontractor progress and performance.
o Review and approve subcontractor invoices, monitor field activities, and coordinate technical oversight and subcontract budget.
o Assist in processing change orders, requests for information, and field change documentation.
Education and Experience Requirements
* Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) with 8‑10 years of relevant experience, or 12‑14 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
* Experience working in an operational environment in a highly regulated industry.
* Temporary works coordinator experience.
* SMSTS certification.
Desirable
* IOSH certification.
* Sellafield experience.
* Black card – CSCS or equivalent.
