We’re looking for an enthusiastic, well-motivated Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology & Transfusion team. You will work across Dewsbury and Pinderfields laboratories, with support as and when required at Pontefract. Modern platforms: Sysmex-managed service with CS-5100/CS-2500 coagulation; XN-9000 track with automated ESR and slide stainer at Pinderfields; XN-2000 at Dewsbury; Bio-Rad Variant II HPLC for haemoglobinopathy screening; Bio-Rad blood grouping in Transfusion. Career development: We offer structured support for portfolio completion, specialist training and career progression. Forward-looking: A new MSC provider is planned to take over the laboratory equipment provision in early 2026, offering exposure to service transition and implementation. About The Service Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust spans Pinderfields, Pontefract and Dewsbury hospitals. Haematology and Transfusion laboratories operate at Pinderfields and Dewsbury, with a remote analyser at Pontefract. You’ll be part of a supportive team that values collaboration, learning and patient-centred practice. Who we’re looking for Qualified route: IBMS-accredited degree and either HCPC registration or completion of the IBMS Registration Portfolio in Haematology and Transfusion Science. Trainee route (if no suitable qualified applicants): IBMS-accredited degree or current apprenticeship leading to an IBMS-accredited degree within the next 2/3 years. A positive, flexible team-player willing to participate in the rotational shift pattern (days, lates, nights, weekends) and to work across all three sites as service needs require. Main Duties As a Biomedical Scientist in Haematology & Transfusion, you’ll: Perform a wide range of routine and specialist tests to HCPC standards. Assess samples, interpret and authorise results, and act on anomalies. Maintain quality and safety through strict QC checks, troubleshooting and equipment care. Work independently during core and out-of-hours shifts to ensure timely patient care. Train and support colleagues, students and ward staff carrying out testing. Contribute to service improvement by assisting with new methods, equipment evaluation and stock control. You’ll combine precision, problem-solving and teamwork to deliver accurate results that make a real difference to patient care. Essential Requirements We’re looking for someone who brings both technical expertise and team spirit: IBMS-accredited degree and HCPC registration (IBMS Registration Portfolio completed). Experience working in NHS Haematology & Blood Transfusion, including out-of-hours shifts. Sound knowledge of health & safety and strict respect for patient confidentiality. Confident working independently and demonstrating excellent laboratory practice. Clear, precise communication skillsboth written and verbalwith colleagues at all levels. A strong team player, calm under pressure, with a friendly and approachable manner. Enthusiastic about ongoing training, development and service improvement.
