Overview
The role is for a Chief Engineer overseeing the engineering aspects within the Maritime Strategic Capability Agreement (MSCA) portfolio. The follow‑on MSCA contract has just been signed with a contract length of at least 10 years. The MSCA portfolio covers the following subject matter areas:
* Manoeuvring & Control (primarily relating to submarines)
* Propulsion (submarine propulsors and surface ship low signature propellers)
* Structures (primarily relating to submarines)
* Maritime Life Support (Submarine Atmospheres, Submarine Escape, Rescue, Abandonment & Survival and Diving)
* Signatures (Stealth Materials and Noise & Vibration)
The work is delivered through the Platform Design and Life Support Integrated Delivery Team (PDLS IDT). As MSCA Chief Engineer you will ensure the delivery of the technical programme is robust and the work is conducted in accordance with the relevant QinetiQ procedures and guidelines.
Responsibilities
* Work with customers and the project management teams to ensure the technical teams understand the context for the work they are conducting.
* Disseminate engineering best practice and promote common approaches across all elements of the MSCA contract.
* Support the development and refinement of processes which define how the engineering services are delivered via the MSCA contract.
* Collaborate with the technical teams and the Programme/Project Management community to proactively identify and resolve engineering issues.
* Contribute as a member of the PDLS IDT management team to the delivery of the PDLS business strategy and objectives, mentor technical/engineering activities, and embed a high‑quality engineering culture within delivery teams.
* Provide customer‑facing support as the point of contact for the MOD Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) Chief Engineer, sit on the Joint Programme Office board, and support the Technical Co‑ordination Groups for the different capability areas (TCGs).
* Collaborate with internal stakeholders – Project Management community, MSCA Chief Technology Officer, Technical Leads and the Functional Management community – to ensure smooth contract delivery.
Requirements & Experience
* Minimum 5‑10 years of progressive responsibility within Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a marine focus.
* Experience with submarine design and/or operations.
* Leadership skills required to engage and motivate teams and contribute to the success of the MSCA and the wider Platforms business.
* Previous experience delivering multiple large programmes simultaneously.
* Deep technical knowledge and understanding of maritime or submarine engineering.
* Degree in Science or Engineering, or an equivalent nationally recognised professional qualification.
* Willingness to learn and adapt, with a proven track record of continuous professional development.
Position Details
* 37 hours per week.
* Base at any of our main UK locations; most projects based at the Haslar site.
* Hybrid working patterns available.
* Travel to other QinetiQ and customer sites expected.
