Role Summary
GM Performance Power Units is seeking a Junior Mechanical Simulation Engineer to join our Power Unit team in Concord, NC. In this entry-level role, you will build expertise across Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD), and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to support the design, validation, and optimization of high-performance power unit components and systems.
As a part of the team that will introduce an American built power unit to the pinnacle of motorsport, Formula 1, this position provides hands-on exposure to world-class race engineering challenges. You will develop into a versatile simulation specialist, contributing to the performance and reliability of power units built to compete at the highest levels of racing.
Responsibilities
• Perform FEA, MBD, and CFD simulations on power unit components and assemblies
• Conduct static, dynamic, thermal, and fatigue analyses
• Support performance, reliability, and cost optimization through simulation-based validation
• Collaborate with senior engineers on high-load and high-performance design challenges
• Validate simulations through correlation with physical testing and measured data
• Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of simulation workflows
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
• Experience or strong interest in one or more of:
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
• Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD)
• Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
• Sound knowledge of engineering fundamentals and first-principles problem solving
• Familiarity with tools such as Abaqus, OptiStruct, AVL Excite, Star CCM+, HyperMesh, or SimLab
• Understanding of materials, structural behavior, and thermal/mechanical loading
• Strong interest in motorsport and high-performance engineering
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with internal combustion engines or rotating machinery
• Knowledge of fatigue analysis, vibration theory, resonance, and forced response
• Exposure to advanced fluid dynamics, turbulence models, and heat transfer
• Programming or scripting skills (Python, MATLAB)
• Hands-on motorsport experience
