Overview
Special Constable (Volunteer Police Officer) role at Surrey and Sussex Police. This is a long-term volunteer role; after initial training, a minimum commitment of 16 hours per month is requested.
As a special constable, you will volunteer alongside police constables to help fight crime, protect the public and build trust within our communities. This is more than just a volunteer role – it offers an opportunity to make a real impact while gaining valuable skills, experience, and a sense of pride from serving others.
Responsibilities
* Respond to 999 emergency calls
* Patrol local neighbourhoods
* Conduct house-to-house enquiries
* Preserve crime scenes
* Present evidence in court
Hours and duties can be varied; you will be based across Surrey and within specialist teams, wearing the same uniform, holding the same powers and responsibilities as paid police officers.
Training and Development
* 14-week training course
* One evening session per week
* Alternate weekend sessions (Saturday & Sunday)
The course covers policing powers and conflict resolution. Upon completion, you will be expected to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours per month to maintain operational competence. As you gain experience, opportunities may include additional skills such as UAV (drones), roads policing and public order.

* You can apply at age 17; you must be 18 on the training course start date.
* Valid manual driving license with no more than 5 penalty points.
* GCSE (A*-C/4-9) in English or equivalent Level 2 qualification; if not, you may still apply but will need to complete a competence test.
* UK residence requirement of three continuous years prior to application (special circumstances apply for service abroad).
* Leave to remain or enter for indefinite period if applicant from outside the EEA.
* Cannot be a member of certain organisations deemed inappropriate (e.g., BNP, Combat 18, The National Front).
* Limitations on visible discriminatory or offensive tattoos; facial tattoos are generally not accepted.
* Ideally no criminal convictions or cautions; disclosure will occur during recruitment and may affect eligibility.
* Declaration of any business interests as part of the application process.
