Locum Consultant in Medical Microbiology

Applications are invited for a Fixed Term Contract for 12 months, full-time (10 PAs). A working week of 9.25 PAs could be considered if an applicant is looking to work less than full time, based on current service requirements. The role incorporates laboratory duties, results authorisation and interpretation, clinical and antibiotic advice, patient consults, ward rounds, and multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs).
A dedicated part of this post will provide Infection Control Doctor provision within NUH, shared with other Consultant colleagues. The candidate will also lead a Specialty MDT. This post supports a high quality infection management service across the Trust's campuses.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will provide a comprehensive clinical and liaison Microbiology service to clinicians, named specialties, and primary care providers. Responsibilities include:
* Providing clinical microbiology input to MDTs as appropriate.
* Conducting Infection Control doctor duties for the acute Trust or primary care, including outbreak investigations and liaising with the UK Health Security Agency.
* Training and supervising specialty resident doctors, Trust Grade doctors, and scientific staff.
* Teaching Microbiology to undergraduates and junior and senior medical colleagues.
* Participating in Audit and Quality Improvement, supporting other specialties.
* Maintaining a programme of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and contributing to Clinical Governance.
* Providing clinical and epidemiological data to the UK Health Security Agency.
* Developing new microbiological and molecular diagnostic techniques.
* Engaging in Infection Prevention and Control and antimicrobial stewardship activities for the NHS and the Greater Nottingham community.
* Assisting with administrative duties associated with the running of the clinical service.
Person Specification
Training & Qualifications
* Full GMC registration, eligible to be included on the Specialist Register or CCT in Microbiology.
* Evidence of continuous professional development and active participation in a recognised CPD scheme.
* MRCP or equivalent training and experience.
* FRCPath in Medical Microbiology by examination or equivalent.
* Higher qualification such as MSc, MD, or PhD.
* Health Care Infection Society Foundation Certificate in Infection Prevention and Control or equivalent.
* Fellowship in IPC.
Clinical Skills/Experience
* Demonstrated technical and clinical skills as required.
* Effective communication with patients, families, and health professionals.
* Experience in antimicrobial stewardship or infection control teams.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* Presentation experience at IPC conferences.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, pro rata if part time.
