We are delighted to advertise a twelve-month clinical Fellowship in Neuroanaesthesia at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. This post is aimed at suitably qualified anaesthetists (trainees at ST7 level or above).

Oxford is a world-renowned neurosurgical centre of both clinical and academic excellence. The John Radcliffe is a regional tertiary neurosurgical centre which serves a catchment area for approximately 2 million people in the Thames Valley. The Oxford neurosurgical department prides itself in providing world class care and pioneering techniques in neurosurgical practice, including the well-established deep brain stimulation service, skull base and pituitary service, epilepsy surgery and awake craniotomy for intra-axial brain tumours.

The fellowship in neurosurgical anaesthesia at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a one-year program for those wishing to gain advanced experience in neuroanaesthesia and neurocritical care medicine. The training is directed at those who are ST7 level or equivalent and want a senior clinical fellow grade.

The fellow will be based primarily in neuro-theatres and the neuroradiology suite in the West Wing of the John Radcliffe Hospital and will deliver anaesthesia to neurosurgical patients. When required, time may be spent delivering anaesthesia in other surgical specialities such as orthopaedics, transplant, vascular, upper GI, plastics, and ENT. This will be averaged over time and reviewed with their educational supervisor on a 3 monthly basis.

The fellowship program covers all aspects of neurosurgery, complex spinal surgery and interventional neuroradiology. In addition, there is an opportunity to develop skills in peri-operative medicine and neuroradiology.The trainee will be a member of the ST6-7 on-call group covering the West Wing and Neuro ICU on call rota on an approximately 1:10 frequency. Annual and study leave arrangements must be coordinated within the department to ensure there is an acceptable level of clinical cover.

There will also be opportunity to gain experience in neuro-critical care. The Neuro-Critical Care Unit is a 16 bedded unit providing care for a diverse patient population, both national and international.

The clinical sessions will be agreed with the clinical lead and will form the basis of the Fellowship job plan. The following programme sets out the basic requirements of the Fellowship, the details to be negotiated and agreed with the post holder prior to commencement of thepost.

The Fellow is expected to assist with projects running in the department.

The Fellow will meet with the clinical supervisor to agree the individual training plan following the period of induction; this will be tailored to suit the individual needs of the fellow. It will take account of clinical, interpersonal and management skills and knowledge. The Fellow will be required to give their agreement to the training programme and confirm their commitment to participate fully in the training and appraisal process.
