Job overview

Opportunities have arisen for a Senior Clinical Fellow to join our Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Your work within the Critical Care Unit at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust will be based at Royal Preston Hospital (RPH) & you will also be expected to provide cross cover for our second site, Chorley & South Ribble District General Hospital (CDH).

There is a 34-beded critical care unit admitting over 1300 patients per year at Royal Preston Hospital, this is a mixed unit made up of level 2 & 3 beds. It has a varied case mix including General Medicine, General Surgery, Trauma, Vascular, Renal Neurosciences, Upper-Gastrointestinal and Maxillofacial Surgery.

There's also an Enhanced Care Unit at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital run by 20 Consultants with an interest in Intensive Care, along with junior support staff.

The unit at Preston has accreditations for all stages of Intensive Care Medicine training.

The Department has undergone a period of rapid expansion, which is reflected in the age and attitude of its career grade members.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

1. Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services for the Directorate.
2. Provide a Critical Care service across the Trust,
3. Participate in the trainee critical care rota on both hospital sites with additional cover during colleagues’ absence.
4. Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than fulltime and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
5. Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
6. Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.
7. Undertake administrative duties involved with the care of his/her patients.
8. Promote high professional standards of clinical care of patients and the health and safety of the theatre environment.
9. Maintain continuing education and professional development at least to the requirements of the faculty of intensive care.

The Critical Care Unit has an established research infrastructure with three research nurses contributing to both national portfolio and local studies.

Opportunities exist for development within a pre-hospital care setting as well as in Trauma Resuscitation leadership skills, dependent on experience and skills.

Modern Education Centres are based at both Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital sites and offer excellent library and study facilities, including PC/Internet support for staff and students.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

13. Full GMC Registration Licence to Practice
14. MBBS or equivalent.

Desirable criteria

15. Post graduate Qualification in Anaesthesia/ED/Medicine
16. Hold ALS / ATLS certification or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria

17. Have a minimum 3 years post foundation Training experience in Anaesthesia/ICM/ Medicine/Emergency medicine with Mandatory 6 months of ICM experience
18. Competent in independent airway Management.
19. Independent in insertion of Central Venous Catheters, Arterial Lines and perform Intubations.
20. Independently manage acutely unwell patients in critical care and provide Various organ supports

Desirable criteria

21. Evidence of commitment to Clinical audit.
22. Experience in use of Ultrasound for central line insertion and perform ECHO in critical care.
23. Involvement in service improvement projects

25. Publications in a peer reviewed journal.
