Junior Clinical Fellow in Ophthalmology

The closing date is 21 April 2026.

This post will join the team responsible for the provision of all Ophthalmology services to the Health Board in Cwm Taf Morgannwg.

The post will be required to support the delivery of inpatient and emergency Ophthalmology services for the local population and foster excellent working relationships within and outside the specialist area, including medical, nursing, secretarial and support staff, General Practitioners and Management Teams.

The post will be part of the 1:8 on‑call rota within the Ophthalmology department in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. Currently junior on‑call roster days include mid‑week and weekends and the on‑call is non‑resident. This may be subject to change.

This post is fixed term for up to 12 months to cover maternity.

These are the current applicable pay scales; however, these may change upon implementation of the framework agreement for reform to the terms and conditions of service for resident doctors and dentists in Wales. Further details can be found at BMA-+-+Framework-Agreement-Wales.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a number of Ophthalmology Specialty Junior Doctors who will be supported by a team of consultants, junior doctors, and Nursing team.

The role will cover all aspects of Ophthalmology services working at junior grade level. This is an ideal opportunity for candidates who wish to gain wider experience in Ophthalmology specialties in an acute setting. The post holder will be required to work on the junior grade doctor on‑call rota for Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

A wide range of general experience is a requirement, and special interests, which complement existing services, will be supported.

Job responsibilities

To be actively involved in the management and decision making for patients.

To be available during the working week so that medical and nursing staff can communicate and consult freely.

To contribute with the multi-disciplinary team in the use of referenced, evidence based guidelines, which are dated, signed and reviewed at least bi‑annually or more frequently in light of new evidence.

You may be expected to make independent clinical decisions, but will receive appropriate training/supervision.

Ensure that an appropriate model of care is adopted which recognises the involvement of the multi-disciplinary team, the patient and family.

Work with the rest of the clinical team to support the delivery of a high quality service provided by well‑trained staff within clear departmental policies and procedures.

Develop and maintain good communication with clinical colleagues across the Health Board, regarding the treatment of their patients, and the appropriate use of the departments resources.

Required to participate in the Health Board Risk Management process and in Clinical Audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Health Board. The post holder will be positively encouraged to participate in research and development in line with Health Board, Commissioner and NHS priorities.

Work to ensure that services within the department fulfil contractual performance indicators and work closely with directorate colleagues in identifying problem areas and planning and implementing appropriate solutions.

The post holder will be required to participate in the on call rota 1:8.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full GMC/GDC Registration
* MRCS or recognised equivalent


Experience

* Up to date with current practices in Ophthalmology and emergency surgery
* Previous experience of working in the NHS / experience of NHS working practices and systems.


Skills & Abilities

* Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from more senior doctors as appropriate
* Experience of the assessing of Ophthalmology emergencies
