Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arrived for an Emergency Health Care Assistant post in Medical Same day Emergency Care. We provide acute emergency medical services from a variety of patients with medical conditions. We accept ambulatory patients in an outpatient setting providing same day care from referrals received directly from GPs, Emergency departments, Paramedics and Urgent treatment care. Our team consists of Consultants, Registrars, Junior Doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Associate Practitioners, Medical Technical Assistants and Emergency Health Care Assistants providing 7 day services including weekends and bank holidays.


Main duties of the job

To work within a multi-disciplinary team, in the delivery of high-quality patient care to patients and relatives. To deliver individualised holistic care to patients and their relatives attending the Emergency Department. To support the registered nursing staff in ensuring that all documentation is up to date and report any changes in the patients’ condition. Perform tasks such as triaging patients, taking observations, venepuncture and cannulation, running point-of-care blood tests, ECG recording, catheterisation, assisting patients on toileting and mobility needs, offering refreshments and snacks to patients, monitoring blood sugar levels, monitoring patients with ascitic drains and assisting procedures like lumbar punctures.

Some Of The Core Tasks Include

* To provide professional, competent basic nursing care to patients and relatives without direct supervision.
* To competently undertake basic agreed clinical activities without direct supervision.
* To prioritise own workload and make independent minor decisions.
* To provide Health Education and Promotion to both patients and relatives.
* To provide basic wound care following training (under senior supervision until evidence of competency has been demonstrated, including aseptic technique and obtaining wound swabs correctly and application of slings and tubi grip).
* To undertake venepuncture and cannulation duties under senior supervision following completion of training and evidence of competency.

Person specification

Experience Essentials

* Experience in acute hospital setting
* A Levels or equivalent level of education
* NVQ 3 / Care Certificate completed competencies
Desirable criteria
* Background experience in acute medical or emergency care
* Health care support worker for at least 2 years
* Cared for adults with dementia

Knowledge

* Essential criteria: Understand fast phase emergency care; Uses good time management skills and handles stress; Excellent communication skills
* Desirable criteria: Excellent team player; Able to deal with deteriorating patients; Understand how to promote and keep own well-being

Skills

* Essential criteria: Venepuncture and Cannulation skills; understands NEWS scoring and escalation; infection control
* Desirable criteria: Basic Life Support competency; can perform difficult cannulation and venous access; ECG recording skills / Cardiac monitoring setup
