Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Water)
We are recruiting multiple Principal Mechanical Design Engineers (Water) for major frameworks across the UK, including a £100 million framework with United Utilities to improve river health in Northwest England.
RPS has over 20 years of collaboration with United Utilities and is involved in innovative projects. As we approach AMP8, this is an exciting period in the water industry, offering opportunities to create positive change.
Within this framework, RPS will optimize programs, develop solutions, and select the best options based on value, carbon footprint, and cost, aiming to deliver exceptional water services and foster resilience and sustainability in the Northwest.
About The Team:
RPS Water Consulting comprises Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts providing Asset Management and Operational Strategy for water industry clients, supporting business planning and delivery. The industry is evolving, requiring innovation, dedication, and teamwork.
We also work with other major water companies across the UK, managing long-term frameworks. Our water projects include prestigious AMP8 programs leading into AMP9 and beyond, offering long-term career stability and impact.
About You:
You should be experienced in producing technical outputs such as specifications, pump and aeration system designs, schedules, and reports. Familiarity with collaborative planning, design reviews, and safety assessments like HAZOPs is essential.
You will provide engineering input for designs, including General Arrangement Drawings, 3D models, and P&ID diagrams. Strong communication skills are necessary for technical presentations and collaborative discussions.
You should understand water and wastewater treatment processes and be capable of assessing existing infrastructure to develop mechanical designs.

Your Responsibilities:
* Engage in all project phases from feasibility to construction support, including site surveys.
* Work on various projects under long-term frameworks with UK water companies.
* Liaise with project managers, clients, supply chain partners, contractors, and stakeholders.
* Support project delivery alongside senior engineers.
* Mentor and guide junior team members.
* Review technical designs, specifications, and reports.
* Understand project requirements through client liaison.
* Interpret technical drawings using AutoCAD or Inventor.
* Conduct asset condition surveys and prepare reports.
* Contribute to P&ID production.
* Prepare mechanical design deliverables, including calculations and procurement documents.
* Support compliance with CDM duties and produce risk assessments.
* Follow Quality Assurance procedures.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
* Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
* Experience in the water sector is advantageous.
* Knowledge of pump design, P&ID creation, specifications, and safety regulations.
* Familiarity with contract procurement methods like NEC.
* Ability to manage time, cost, and quality.
* Support for junior staff development.
* Willingness to travel and inspect sites.
* Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar software is a plus.
Qualifications:
* An IMechE-accredited degree; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
* Chartered status or working towards it.
* Membership or application in a professional body like IET, InstMC, or CIWEM.
