Theatre Practitioner

Theatre Practitioners required for both anaesthetics and surgery, working as the scrubbed and circulating practitioner. To deliver high‑quality peri‑operative care across a range of surgical specialties, both elective and emergency.

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of peri‑operative care programmes, ensuring patient safety and positive outcomes throughout the surgical pathway. They will work as part of the multidisciplinary theatre team and may, on occasion, take responsibility for the coordination and supervision of theatre staff for an operating list or span of duty.

Scunthorpe Theatres primarily undertake Urology, Gynaecology, General, Colorectal, ENT, Dental, Oral, Orthopaedic trauma and Obstetric surgeries.

ODP and anaesthetic nurses working as the anaesthetic practitioner are expected to work in PACU, cover A&E trauma calls, for adult and paediatric patients, attend emergencies throughout the hospital and assist with intra‑hospital transfers.

Multi‑skilling is actively encouraged, and the department is committed to supporting the ongoing development of clinical skills through training and supervised practice.


Main duties of the job

Prepare, check and lay up sterile instruments, equipment and consumables appropriate to the planned procedure, working under the direction of senior practitioners when required. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team, providing instruments, sutures and materials safely and efficiently.

Participate in the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and undertake swab, needle and instrument counts in line with Trust policy, reporting and escalating any discrepancies immediately. Handle and maintain the integrity of surgical instruments during procedures and ensure the correct preparation, labelling and documentation of pathology specimens prior to dispatch. Assist with the safe use of surgical equipment, including diathermy and tourniquets, within scope of practice, training and competence.

Maintain strict aseptic technique throughout the peri‑operative period and adhere to infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment. Contribute to maintaining a safe operating environment for patients and staff.

Prepare the theatre environment prior to operating lists, ensuring equipment and supplies are available and functional, and report equipment faults promptly. Support effective theatre turnaround while maintaining patient safety and quality of care. Assist with post‑procedure decontamination and preparation for subsequent cases.

Person Specification


Education/ Qualifications

* In possession of Diploma/Degree in Operating Department Practice or Qualified RGN
* Evidence of continued professional development


Knowledge Training and Skills

* Sound interpersonal and communication skills
* Post‑registration experience in a theatre or surgical environment
* Knowledge of Patient Administration IT systems
