Theopportunity has arisen within the Occupational Therapy team working within thePlym Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Mount Gould Hospital, for a part time22.5 hpw, Band 3, Occupational Therapy Assistant.

Thepost holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting theOccupational Therapy service through clinical, administrative andorganisational duties.

Thepost holder should possess excellent communication skills and evidence ofworking within a team.

Therole involves working closely with qualified occupational therapists and othermembers of the multidisciplinary team, both on the unit and in patients ownhome, prior to discharge, as required.

Thereis regular supervision and in-service training, alongside a supportive learningenvironment.

Main duties of the job

To provide a continuing element of the overall therapy programme/treatment plan to clients within the setting. This may include clients with additional physical health needs, physical disability, behaviours that challenge & learning disabilities

You will be involved with monitoring the patients progress, making some treatment decisions while assessing & re-assessing the patients progress

You will observe general behaviour, functional ability & response of patients & record the information liaising with the senior therapist/worker

To undertake client interventions and reviews, regularly meeting the relevant professionals to discuss progress, and reporting back if any problems occur

To seek advice & supervision from the senior therapist/worker within the team as necessary to ensure appropriate patient management & care

To use knowledge & skills to engage patients in therapeutic activities to promote healthy psychological & physiological wellbeing. Encouraging self-management techniques were able

To prescribe basic equipment & minor adaptions under prescribers guidelines & with guidance, where required, from a senior therapist

Deliver, collect & instruct in the use of equipment for patients as part of their treatment plan

Report defects in equipment, taking action to ensure such equipment is withdrawn from service

Be responsible for material stock & maintenance stock levels as required

All LWSW staff are expected to able & willing to work across a 7 day service

Job responsibilities

To support all aspects of therapy assessment and treatment of patients within the role setting. Facilitate a wide variety of therapeutic interventions and activities depending on service needs (this may include, one to one, group or joint working with colleagues).

Provide support and supervision to patients to enable access and participation incommunity-based support and social inclusion services.

The post holder will work with patients referred to the service who may have a wide range of acute/chronic conditions. To support the running of the department including admin responsibilities and infection control measures.

The post holder will be part of the wider integrated team which includes physical, mental health and adult social care services. This may include developing relationships with external services where appropriate.

To use technical and creative skills to assist in the provision of a flexible based therapeutic activity programme as part of the therapy service provision to adults using the service.

Will receive referrals (internal or external) after initial assessment from registered professionals/assistant practitioners.

Liaise and communicate with members of the MDT and wider services both internally within the organisation and externally where necessary.

To facilitate individual activities for specified patients working within risk management guidelines. This may include working alone without direct supervision for periods of time under the guidance of a registered professional/Manager.

To be aware of and follow the health and safety at work act, local and national guidelines, policies and procedures.

To participate in all mandatory training required for the role and participate in training thatis role specific which includes training to respond to urgent situations e.g. safeguarding,untoward incidents.

Assist in collection, maintenance and dissemination of statistical data this could be in theform of therapeutic outcome measures and operational requirements (e.g. audit).

To participate in the planning and development of the service and for the Directorate as awhole. This may involve participating, where appropriate, in defined projects.

To take a holistic approach to client management, carry out tasks and treatment plans as directed by senior staff. To feed back to the appropriate worker and maintain accurate clinical records.

To liaise with other health, social or voluntary care services and agencies to ensure identified patient care needs outside the scope of the team are met.

Where needed Interventions include both individual and group-based sessions with an expectation for the post holder to participate in the planning and delivery of group sessions. Treatment sessions may also take place in the local community or the patients home

Some roles including those at the STCC, will be required to support / assist in medication administration according to patient needs in line with the processes associated with STCC. The post holder will also be required to undertake specific clinical skills such as skin assessments and continence management.

Responsibility for administration

Prioritises workload effectively, this could include scheduling your workday appropriately or managing your own diary of appointments and visits (as well as mileage if applicable) This requires a high level of time management and organisation skills.

To be aware of, and adhere to, the correct procedures for ordering, maintaining and using materials and equipment as directed by registered staff.

To participate in the planning and implementation of operational policies, projects and service development within the team.

To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date client records and related documentation in line with clinical guidance and LSW policy.

To be aware of, and act upon, LWSW and safety policies, including the prompt recording of any accident, incident, or other untoward event involving self, patients or other staff.

To keep abreast of policy changes and developments within LWSW and implement relevant LWS policies, protocols and guidelines.

To take a flexible approach to supporting colleagues in times of caseload pressure, including working with colleagues to maintain support across the team within the resources available.

Report any changes in the patients condition or care needs to the relevant therapist and document accordingly.

Maintain confidentiality of information being aware of trust policies and local protocols and keeping up to date with changes

Responsibility for financial and/or physical resources

The post holder will have no direct responsibility for finances; however they will adhere to the relevant trust policies on financial issues.

Person Specification


Experience

* Experience of formulating therapeutic relationships.
* Previous experience of working within a healthcare setting or similar role(employment, work experience, volunteering)

* Develops and maintains positive and appropriate relationships with service users, families and carers, demonstrates, kindness, empathy and respect at all times.


Knowledge

* Understanding of mental health, physical health, learning disability conditions

* Understanding of own role boundaries

Qualifications

* Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) level 3 qualifications (e.g. A levels or T-Levels) or demonstrated ability and commitment to achieve a relevant level 3 qualification. Level 2 functional skills, or as a level 3 apprenticeship such as the Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship (or other level 3 qualification pathway)
