About the role
We are seeking a Principal Engineer to lead design delivery and implementation of sustainable transport and public realm projects from inception to completion, primarily in London. The ideal candidate has a strong background in design and project management and a proven track record of successfully leading large, cross‑disciplinary initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
* Design Management: Oversee the design process, ensuring all work meets the highest standards and client requirements. Manage the design team, coordinate with other departments, and deliver on time and within budget.
* Project Management: Plan, schedule, budget, and allocate resources. Ensure all project milestones are met and projects are completed on time and within budget.
* Client Liaison: Serve as the main point of contact for clients, keeping them informed of progress throughout the project.
* Risk Management: Identify and manage project risks, resolving issues swiftly and effectively.
* Quality Assurance: Maintain the highest quality standards for all design work and resolve any issues promptly.
* Team Leadership: Lead and motivate the design team to work efficiently and collaboratively.
A Typical Week Would Include
* Preparation of highway designs for construction projects and coordinating input from other disciplines.
* Developing drawings, design details, specifications, bill of quantities, and design calculations.
* Attending client and internal progress meetings and maintaining action trackers.
* Coordinating with discipline leads and preparing updates to scheme programmes.
* Implementing QA/QM procedures, assisting with Project Execution Plans, and carrying out any resulting actions.
* Maintaining project commercial risk registers and supporting the preparation of design H&S risk management plans and schedules.
* Coordinating technical inputs and ensuring project information is disseminated throughout the team.
* Assisting with technical decision logs and overseeing preparation of fee proposals and change control documents.
* Managing internal processes for financial reporting, including forecasting.
* Preparing Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for site surveys and participating in site visits as required.
* Updating project plans and managing document control using SharePoint.
* Planning and delivering project deliverables and milestones.
* Raising orders for supply‑chain partner technical support.
What We Are Looking For
* Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
* Experience in design management and project management.
* Holder of a relevant professional qualification (IENG or CEng) or close to obtaining one.
* Strong leadership and team‑management skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to report to senior level.
* Proven track record of successfully leading design projects from inception to completion.
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work well under pressure.
