Purpose of role:
To oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice. Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place. Monitor and report on the financial health of the organisation. To support and advise the Board of Trustees andFinance Sub-committee.

Background: The Thalidomide Society was established in 1963, as a parent support group, eventually registering as a charity and then converting to a CIO. The aim of the Society has always been to support those affected by the drug Thalidomide and others who have similar disabilities. The Society is managed and mainly run by the Board of trustees with two part-time employees.
Activities involved in the role:
1. To ensure that the finance of the organisation complies with its governing document, charity law, and other relevant legislation and regulations. Contribute and liaise actively with the board of trustees' in giving firm strategic financial direction to the organisation.
2. Ensure Board members are aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.
3. Report the financial position at board meetings (balance sheet, income and expenditure, cash flow.
4. Oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
5. Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place.
6. Ensure salary payments, Pensions, PAYE, and NI payments are paid in a timely manner
7. Appraise the financial viability of plans, proposals, and feasibility studies.
8. Lead on appointing and liaising with auditors/independent examiner.
9. Oversee sales and purchase payments and gift aid claims
The time commitment and particular requirements:
We are looking for a commitment of up to 5 hours per month, possibly more at busy times such as leading up to the AGM/Conference. The role is home based, with most Board and sub-committee meetings held via Zoom. However, one in person Board meeting is held each year following on from the annual AGM. It may be necessary to attend ad-hoc meetings and events as required .
Payment of expenses: Any out-of-pocket expensesis claimed on the appropriate expense form, providing receipts in accordance with the financial policy. The Thalidomide Society is not responsible for insuring personal items used at home or the provision of computer equipment.
