Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon

We welcome applications for the post of Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. This is a full‑time substantive post focused on Colorectal Cancer delivery and supporting the provision of elective and emergency General Surgery.
The Department of Colorectal Surgery provides general surgical and specialist colorectal care to patients across all three main acute sites at MSEFT Basildon Hospital, Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, or Southend Hospital. You will be principally based at Basildon Hospital but may be expected to work across our sites depending on professional or service needs.
The colorectal department is the 3rd largest in the country by volume of major cancer resections, with an expanding colorectal robotic‑surgical programme. The Trust has three Da Vinci robots; Southend Hospital offers a complex pelvic surgery & cancer centre; Broomfield provides established Neurogastroenterology, pelvic floor services and a complex abdominal wall service.
Main duties of the job
* Provide consultant‑level General Surgery on‑call duties (1 in 10). Includes on‑site day‑time cover and post‑take ward rounds, emergency operating, with senior support available.
* Perform independent elective operating for the elective recovery of patients on the long waiting list, including Saturday work with compensatory days off.
* Provide outpatient colorectal and general surgical clinic service, including minor procedures.
* Specialise in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and participate in hot laparoscopic cholecystectomy list cover.
* Offer Emergency Surgical Ambulatory Care Clinics.
* Manage general surgical conditions such as benign coloproctological disorders, abdominal wall and groin hernias, and contribute to the management of general surgical emergencies in adults and non‑specialised emergency general surgery conditions in children (1 in 10 frequency).
Please note that while the main vacancy site is Basildon Hospital, the on‑call duties will be carried out at Southend Hospital.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent.
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register or eligible for entry on Register within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview.
* Evidence of completion of specialist training or equivalent.
* JAG accreditation for colonoscopy.
Experience and Knowledge
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty.
* Comprehensive knowledge of the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems.
* Experience in the development of business cases for service improvement.
* Experience in paediatric surgery.
Research / Audit Experience
* Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
* Recent published clinical research in peer‑reviewed journal.

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 a year, pro rata.
