Safety-Critical Systems Engineer / Subsystem Engineer - 6 Month Contract (Outside IR35)
Role: Safety-Critical Systems Engineer / Subsystem Engineer
Duration: 6-Month Contract (Likely Extend) - Outside IR35
Location: Remote Working with regular travel to site UK
*Confidential Assignment
Overview
We are supporting a confidential advanced engineering client seeking a Safety-Critical Systems Engineer / Subsystem Engineer on an initial 6-month contract.
This role will support the development and integration of complex safety-critical subsystems within a highly regulated engineering environment. The assignment is suited to engineers with experience across aerospace, defence, unmanned systems, complex electronics, safety engineering or other mission-critical technology programmes.
Due to the confidential nature of the programme, further project details will only be shared with suitably qualified candidates following an initial screening discussion.
Responsibilities
- Support the design, development and integration of safety-critical subsystems within a complex platform environment.
- Contribute to requirements definition, interface management, functional decomposition and system-level design activities.
- Support the development of safe and robust system architectures, including safety logic, inhibit chains, fault tolerance and controlled activation functionality.
- Contribute to hazard analysis, risk assessment and system safety activities.
- Identify failure conditions, propose hazard mitigations and support verification strategies.
- Support qualification and verification activities, including environmental testing, functional testing, safety validation and test result analysis.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams across electrical, avionics, mechanical, integration and test disciplines.
- Support supplier engagement, component evaluation, customer discussions and technical reviews where required.
- Produce technical documentation, safety-related artefacts and engineering evidence packages in line with programme requirements.
Experience Required
- Experience working within aerospace, defence, unmanned systems, complex electronics or other safety-critical engineering environments.
- Strong understanding of structured systems engineering and safety engineering methods.
- Experience contributing to subsystem design, requirements capture, interface definition and verification planning.
- Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Strong technical documentation and stakeholder communication skills.
- Pragmatic, structured and detail-focused engineering approach.
Desirable Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Safety-critical subsystem design
- System safety engineering
- Safety and arming systems
- Complex electronic subsystems
- Initiation or controlled activation systems
- Electro-mechanical or electro-explosive device environments
- Embedded safety-critical systems
- Platform or munition integration
- Verification, validation and qualification testing
- Environmental and functional test programmes
Relevant Standards and Methods
Familiarity with safety-critical engineering standards within aerospace, defence or similarly regulated environments would be beneficial. This may include exposure to standards covering:
- System safety
- Safety-critical programmable elements
- Safety and suitability for service
- Complex subsystem qualification
- Environmental and functional testing
- Safety-critical design assurance
- Hazard analysis and risk mitigation
*Direct experience with defence, aerospace or weapon-system safety standards would be advantageous but is not essential for all applicants.
Candidate Profile
We welcome applications from engineers at varying levels, from developing engineers through to senior engineers capable of leading work packages or acting as subsystem focal points.
The successful candidate will be technically credible, delivery-focused and comfortable operating in a fast-paced development environment where confidentiality, engineering rigour and cross-functional collaboration are essential.
