Summary
We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager (SEM) to lead the engineering aspects of a multi-disciplinary contract, ensuring the delivery of optimal solutions that meet client requirements. The SEM will be embedded within the core Project Team, reporting directly to the Project Lead, and will act as the technical authority on HTM compliance and industry best practices. This role carries responsibility for safety-critical elements and the application of sound engineering principles.
Key responsibilities include developing a thorough understanding of project and organisational structures, managing design and maintenance changes, and optimising document control and knowledge sharing. The SEM will provide specialist engineering advice, mentor M&E engineers and technicians, and contribute to asset lifecycle planning. Close collaboration with clinical staff, hospital facility managers, and other stakeholders is essential to ensure M&E systems meet operational needs.
The role involves cost estimating for maintenance and new works, enforcing quality policies, leading on-site procedures and inspections, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation. The SEM will also support emergency response planning for M&E systems and manage complex multi-disciplinary designs, ensuring scope clarity and avoiding scope creep.
Skills
Broad technical knowledge of engineering systems, especially critical and life safety systems
Expertise in HTM compliance and healthcare-specific regulations (HTM, HBN)
Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities for M&E engineers and technicians
Ability to produce clear, concise technical reports linked to statutory and NHS guidance
Experience in specification writing for procurement scopes
Knowledge of asset lifecycle planning and engineering methodologies
Commercial awareness including cost estimating and budget management
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Health & Safety awareness and project management experience
Organised, logical approach with strong document control and quality assurance skills
Software/Tools
Common document control systems
Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Engineering design and project management software (as applicable)
Certifications & Standards
HND/HNC in Building Services or comparable Engineering discipline (Essential)
Degree in Building Services or similar Engineering discipline (Desirable)
Membership of a professional body such as CIBSE, IET, IHEEM, or IWFM (Essential)
Chartered Engineer status (Desirable)
