The Role

We seek to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor in Computer Science with significant competence in contemporary applications of Artificial Intelligence. Applicants should have a track record of publications and academic achievement to complement the research in the School of Computer Science and Mathematics, and the ability to lead in the disciplines of Computer Science and AI, broadly, but preferably in applications related to cyber security, explainable and/or applied AI.

This is a career-defining opportunity for an ambitious academic who will extend the School’s already strong research and teaching portfolio in these fields by liaising actively with the newly established Knowledge Exchange and Research Institute, KERI – one pillar of which is cyber security.

While this position is fixed-Term, for 4 (four) years – it provides a full range of opportunities and tools to facilitate a substantive career development and a platform for contributing to this cross-disciplinary field through research activities, publications and an impact on both industry and the society at large.

The Person

An effective communicator, you will hold a PhD in Computer Science or closely-related area and an appropriate HE teaching qualification, such as FHEA, in addition to an established and rich research profile.

You will make a strong contribution to the profile of the School through demonstrable excellence and leadership in research and teaching. You will work with a team of talented lecturers to deliver vibrant, relevant education to your students, using modern pedagogic approaches to develop their profiles – as part of the University’s progressive, award winning Future Skills concept, leading in the HE sector – which permeates all our courses and delivery.

The Faculty

There are few faculties across the UK university landscape as varied in their scope as the Faculty of Engineering, Computing & the Environment (ECE). We teach and research across a wide range of subjects, allowing for real cross-discipline innovation and creativity. Our lecturers are experts – working at the forefront of their fields and actively engaged in research so they can bring advanced knowledge to their teaching. Our state-of-the-art facilities include specialist laboratories, a public outreach centre, a specialist virtual reality centre, a rocket lab, flight simulators, renewable energy lab, and 3 new labs related to electric, electronic and robotics, as well as an advanced design studio. For future scientists and engineers, this combines to create the ultimate real-life space for practical learning. For academic professionals, this all adds up to a truly vibrant, exciting environment in one of the largest and most diverse STEM faculties in the sector.

The School is a close-knit college of academics with strengths in broad computing disciplines, exemplified by its internationally recognised research in AI, computer vision and machine learning, as well as in networks and cyber security. The School hosts an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Education, ACE-CSE, with a Silver Award by the NCSC, since 2021.

We offer high-quality courses focused on applied computer science, cybersecurity, games and digital media, reflecting the needs of business and industry. Our courses are strengthened by active collaborations with industry as well as educational and research partnerships. The University was awarded a TEF Gold Award, for its excellence in education provision – to which the School of Computer Science and Mathematics contributed significantly.
