Position Summary
The role of Training Programme Director is to work with and support the Postgraduate Dean in leading the delivery of a wide range of functions within the specialty, aligned to the NHS England mandate. This is a fixed 3‑year term (maximum of 2 × 3‑year tenure). Due to NHSE organisational change, a contract is currently offered until 31 March 2027, subject to review. Salary contribution aligns with TPD sessional payments at £10,000 per session. Discuss terms with your employer before applying.
Key Responsibilities
* Recruitment and placement of trainees with Local Education Providers to ensure curriculum needs are met in a high‑quality learning environment.
* Assess progress of trainees towards curriculum requirements.
* Organise teaching and training programmes to enhance curriculum delivery.
* Support trainees in difficulty and provide career guidance.
* Deliver on the responsibilities of the Specialty Training Committee, reporting to the Postgraduate Dean and ensuring compliance with GMC and Royal College of Physicians standards.
* Support Postgraduate Deans in meeting all NHSE statutory requirements.
Education and Training Quality Improvement and Performance
* Promote the development of a quality learning environment for all learners.
* Ensure all learners have equity of access to learning opportunities in an environment free from negative workplace behaviours.
Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality Improvement
* Assist in the development of quality processes complementary across the healthcare workforce.
* Support the use of clinical skills training and simulation where appropriate, emphasising teamwork and human factors.
School Programme Management
* Oversee the Specialty’s Regional Training Programme and advise Postgraduate Deans and Heads of School on specialty‑specific matters, trainee/trainer concerns, recruitment to training posts and programmes, postgraduate programme management (assessments, progression, rotations, support and remediation, out‑of‑programme management, trainee management, career support, less‑than‑full‑time training, inter‑deanery transfer, academic training and other related work‑streams).
* Provide reports to the Specialty Training Committee and School Board.
* Complete the annual school development plan.
* Advise and support the Postgraduate Dean in educational and workforce development, including professional development of the educational faculty.
* Support compliance with requirements on supervision and support for trainees and learners.
* Identify learning needs and support provision of educational appraisal, educator development and resources for faculty, trainees and learners.
* Create and promote shared learning opportunities to increase effective inter‑professional working across the School.
Intelligence Support
* Ensure local intelligence processes inform quality management processes.
* Engage with information systems (trainee database, post establishments).
Strategic Workforce Development and Commissioning
* Contribute to workforce planning, ensuring clinical engagement with local and national workforce planning processes.
* Develop educational programmes to support achievement of curriculum competencies, engaging with commissioning processes as required.
* Identify and support implementation of alternative workforce solutions within the School.
* Advise the Postgraduate Dean on commissioning and decommissioning activities.
Finance
* Engage with financial business planning processes and associated School budgets as needed.
* Ensure compliance with procurement requirements.
Other Requirements
* Applicants from within the NHS will be offered only on a secondment basis; agreement must be obtained from their employer before submitting the application.
* Contractual office‑based colleagues are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in‑person.
