Chair for Newbury Sea Cadet Corps

What difference will you make?

The Sea Cadets develop skills and confidence in young people. As Chair, you will manage the charity, ensuring expenditure aligns with the budget. Each unit is responsible for fundraising, health and safety, building maintenance, and providing the best experience for cadets. The Cadet Force Adult Volunteers deliver the cadet experience, with the Commanding Officer on the Unit Management Team.

What are we looking for?

You should be able to listen and lead an organization operating in a matrix management style. You will ensure the charity operates legally and supports cadets, while the delivery of services is managed by the Cadet Force Adult Volunteers. Experience in the charity sector is helpful, especially in financial management and compliance with the Charity Commission.

What will you be doing?

The Sea Cadets is the UK’s leading maritime charity, offering nautical adventure and fun, providing a head start in life for young people. Based on London Road, Newbury Sea Cadets has approximately 50 cadets from West Berkshire. We seek enthusiastic volunteers to support unit management. Training courses are available to develop skills, enhance your CV, and support your role. Tasks can be shared among volunteers, so consider bringing a friend.

About the Volunteer Chairperson role

* Be a Charity Trustee
* Maintain, develop, and chair an effective Unit Management Team (UMT)
* Oversee compliance with charity regulations and Sea Cadet policies
* Ensure the unit is well-maintained, safe, and secure for volunteers and cadets
* Identify priorities and work with the team to develop plans
* Chair regular UMT meetings (usually 1 hour, monthly or bi-monthly, remotely via Teams)

About you

Previous managerial experience is helpful, but a positive attitude and passion for improving young lives are most important. You should be reliable, honest, a good communicator, team-oriented, and able to motivate others. Naval background is not necessary.
