Job description
Prospero Teaching is seeking an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) or Mentor to join a specialist provision in Fareham (PO16). This setting supports secondary-aged pupils with complex needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). The provision delivers a therapeutic, highly personalised curriculum focused on emotional wellbeing, life skills and academic progress.
Role Overview
This is a practical, rewarding role ideal for someone confident working with pupils who present with challenging behaviour. You will deliver lessons, mentor pupils, and support their wider development both in the classroom and out in the community.
Key Responsibilities
1. Deliver one-to-one and small group teaching across multiple subjects
2. Plan and lead engaging, differentiated lessons tailored to individual needs
3. Provide pastoral support and act as a trusted adult for vulnerable learners
4. Work independently with pupils in the community to develop life skills and social confidence
5. Build strong, positive relationships with pupils who may struggle to trust adults
6. Deliver practical lessons in Cooking, Art, Construction, IT and vocational subjects
7. Support outdoor learning activities such as sailing, canoeing and bushcraft
8. Teach Functional Skills English and Maths
9. Offer mentoring and counselling-style support to build emotional resilience
10. Work collaboratively with therapists, teachers and external agencies to create personalised learning plans
Essential Requirements
11. HLTA qualification or relevant experience
12. Experience supporting pupils with SEMH and ASC
13. Confident in planning and delivering tailored learning
14. Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills
15. Comfortable with lone working in the community
16. Ability to build relationships with pupils who present with challenging behaviour
17. Full driving licence and access to a vehicle
18. Availability Monday-Friday, 08:00-16:30 or 08:30-17:00
19. Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply)
20. Right to work in the UK
21. Two professional child-related references
Salary & Benefits
22. Actual salary: £24,000 – £28,000 per annum
