About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual, as a Resuscitation Officer, to join our dedicated, innovative, small and friendly team at Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. Our team aims to provide high quality training, in the field of resuscitation, ensuring high quality care and patient safety for everyone at Mid Yorkshire!

We are looking for someone who has a passion for teaching and education. Someone who is dynamic, approachable, inspirational, adaptable and flexible. You will assist in planning, organising and implementing training for all clinical and non clinical staff across 3 hospital sites. Training and education is provided for staff of all grades and disciplines providing a unique opportunity to build relationships across every speciality. You will act as a recognised expert in the field of resuscitation for both adults and paediatrics.

Within this role you will support, guide and on occasion lead, clinical teams during emergencies. You must therefore have credibility and experience working in an acute setting with regular exposure and management of acutely ill deteriorating patients and patients in cardiac arrest. Being composed and able to maintain a calm manner in situations of crisis, good leadership and interpersonal communication skills and empathy are important and essential qualities to fulfil this role.

You will be given professional autonomy allowing you to plan and prioritise your own workload. There will be opportunity for you to lead in clinical audits such as the National Cardiac Arrest Audit (NCAA), Crash trolley and/or ReSPECT audits. You will organise, coordinate, instruct and direct national Resuscitation Council (UK) courses such as the Advanced Life Support (ALS), Immediate Life Support (ILS) and Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS) and coordinate the Royal College of Surgeons, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course. You will help us to monitor, audit and ensure emergency equipment such as crash trolleys and defibrillators are easily accessible and available for staff and patients. You will support teams and divisions in investigations learning from incidents providing expert specialist knowledge and support in resuscitation.

Main duties

* Planning, provision and evaluation of all aspects of resuscitation training.
* Be a member of the clinical resuscitation team where necessary attending paediatric and adult cardiac arrests.
* Review adverse clinical incidents providing advice and remedial training, as necessary.
* Be a member of the Resuscitation Committee and provide specialist advice on resuscitation training techniques and equipment.
* Function as a resource of expertise on resuscitation, providing an advisory service to MYTT staff, patients, relatives, and external agencies.
* Organise, direct and co-ordinate nationally recognised courses for example the Advanced Life Support Course (ALS): Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS).
* Responsibility of highlighting any areas of deficit/clinical risk. Plan and implement appropriate actions to change practice where necessary.
* Respond promptly to critical incidents and complaints.
* Maintain effective communication and teamwork within the Resuscitation Department.
* Attend regional and national conferences and study days to help maintain Professional development.
* Lead change in clinical practice throughout the Trust in response to new research, audit and changes in existing national guidelines, policies, and procedures.
* Facilitate appropriate instruction in the use of new resuscitation equipment introduced into clinical areas, to promote safe practice and reduce risk.
* Promote the importance of resuscitation throughout the Trust through negotiation and presentation of the specialist knowledge and skills required for the resuscitation of adults and children.
* Demonstrate and teach complex physical skills.


Essential person specification requirements


Qualifications

* Degree level Registered Nurse / Healthcare Professional (HCPC)
* Current ILS Resus Council (UK) Instructor Status
* Current ALS (Resus Council (UK) Instructor or to achieve within 12 months of post
* Teaching qualification
* Experience in teaching and assessing
* Qualification in one of the following ENB courses: ENB 124, 199, 100 (or equivalent specialist training)


Experience

* Relevant clinical experience working at band 6 (or equivalent) in a critical care environment e.g. ITU/CCU/A&E
* Evidence of attending/participating in cardiac arrests and being an effective member of the team
* Experience of delivering multidisciplinary training
* Ability to prioritise workload and project manage
* Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team
* Ability to function strategically, whilst demonstrating empathy and sensitivity in highly stressful situations


Knowledge and Awareness

* Awareness of own limitations
* Relevant healthcare legislation
* NMC / HCPC and related professional issues
* Physically capable of demonstrating and delivering practical resuscitation skills and procedures that are physically demanding and / or require complex techniques
* Able to plan, co-ordinate, manage the delivery of training to different professional groups
* Ability to develop written protocols & guidelines
* Current Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines
* Has up to date knowledge of Clinical Governance issues
