Are you passionate about creating healthier places to live and enabling use of sustainable transport? Are you an experienced engineer ready to take the next step in your career? AECOM’s Leeds based Streets team is looking for a Senior Engineer (Active and Sustainable Transport) to lead the design and delivery of innovative active travel, public transport, traffic engineering, and urban realm projects across Leeds, West Yorkshire and beyond. You will be joining a strong team who are recognised as market leaders in the transportation sector, working across all stages of project development and delivery, from feasibility through to construction. Here’s what you’ll do:

As a Senior Engineer (Active and Sustainable Transport) you’ll take a leading role in the development of scheme solutions from concept through to detailed design and implementation. You’ll manage technical outputs, mentor junior staff, directly engage with Clients, and take responsibility for the successful delivery of high-quality outputs.

Examples of some previous & current projects:

1. Riverside Path, York City Council

2. Active Travel Routes: Westmorland and Furness / Cumberland Council

3. Northern Gateway Active Travel and Public Concept Designs

4. Wakefield Bus and Cycle Priority Corridors (north and south)

5. Normanton Safer Routes to Schools

Key responsibilities and requirements:

6. Lead the design and delivery of active travel, public transport, general traffic engineering and urban realm schemes.

7. Prepare and review technical outputs including drawings, reports, and specifications.

8. Deliver all work in accordance with project briefs, design standards, and regulatory requirements.

9. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across AECOM and external stakeholders.

10. Delegate and coordinate tasks for graduates and technicians, supporting their development.

11. Manage project timelines, budgets, and quality standards.

12. Champion Health & Safety best practices, including CDM responsibilities.

13. Report regularly to the Principal Engineer or Project Manager on progress and risks

14. Proven experience in scoping, concept, preliminary, and detailed design of active travel and traffic engineering schemes.

15. Strong knowledge of design elements for active travel design and general traffic engineering (such as drainage, junctions, and carriageway improvements).

16. Working knowledge of relevant design standards including LTN 1/20, TSRGD, Manual for Streets, DMRB, and the Traffic Signs Manual.

17. Familiarity with active travel design auditing procedures including Active Travel England’s scheme review tools.

18. Proficiency in Civils 3D (desirable), AutoCAD and Microsoft Office (essential).

19. Proficiency in other software design packages, active mode appraisal tools and guidance advantageous. E.g. GIS, ReMix, Propensity to Cycle Tool (PCT), Inclusive Mobility Guidance, Equity Impact Assessment.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible?

Here’s what we’re looking for:

20. Chartered or Incorporated Engineer CEng / IEng or Support will be provided towards chartership.

21. Recognised engineering qualification or preferably a degree in engineering

22. Knowledge of system interfaces and experience in technical engineering leadership which impact on discipline design principles and demonstrate experience of the successful management of interfaces within projects.
