A leading global maritime group with over 50 years of experience investing in and operating shipping assets is seeking a Legal Counsel – Shipping Claims to join its London office.
With a substantial international presence across Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia, the Group commercially and technically manages one of the world’s largest fleets, providing best-in‑class maritime transportation services worldwide.
The Role
This is a key position within the legal team, responsible for protecting the company’s interests across a wide range of maritime claims and disputes. The successful candidate will work closely with internal stakeholders, insurers, P&I Clubs, and external counsel globally to ensure efficient and commercially sound resolution of matters.
Key Responsibilities
* Managing cargo claims, vessel incidents, charterparty and bill of lading disputes
* Handling general P&I matters and litigated crew claims
* Liaising with chartering, operations, insurance, technical and commercial teams to ensure coordinated claims handling
* Working closely with external solicitors (domestic and international), P&I Clubs and legal cost insurers
* Maintaining detailed claims reporting and providing weekly updates to internal stakeholders
* Reviewing and negotiating charterparty terms and supporting live operational matters
* Contract interpretation (charterparties and bills of lading)
* Piracy, war risks and operational constraints
* Trade restrictions, sanctions and embargoes
* Delivering internal seminars and training sessions on shipping law topics
* Reviewing charterparties, pool agreements and related contractual documentation
Experience & Skills
* Minimum 4 years’ PQE
* Background within a shipping company, P&I Club, or law firm specialising in shipping claims
* Strong knowledge of English maritime law and international dispute resolution, including LMAA arbitration
* Experience handling P&I Club matters and legal costs providers
* Excellent negotiation, analytical and communication skills
* Ability to manage multiple matters in a fast‑paced, international environment
* Fluent English (additional languages advantageous)

* English‑qualified Solicitor or equivalent
