We are seeking a highly organised and detail‑oriented Finance Assistant to join the Finance team at Sandwell College. This excellent opportunity is ideal for an individual with strong administrative and financial skills, supporting the day‑to‑day operations of a busy Finance department within a further education environment.
The successful candidate will contribute to a range of finance functions, including payroll administration, supporting capital expenditure and projects, month‑end processes, budget monitoring and general financial administration. You will work collaboratively across the College, helping to support effective financial operations that contribute to an outstanding student experience.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist in the preparation and processing of payroll, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery, including hourly payroll and IR35 checks.
* Maintain payroll records, including starters, leavers and contractual changes.
* Reconcile payroll data and resolve discrepancies.
* Administer capital expenditure and capital projects, maintaining detailed records of funding and reporting variances against budget.
* Support the Director of Finance in preparing and submitting capital grant returns accurately and within deadlines.
* Improve and streamline financial processes and reporting within the finance system and provide training to colleagues on its use.
* Assist with month‑end and year‑end processes as required by the Director of Finance and provide support to other finance areas as needed.
* Complete monthly ONS returns.
* Perform general office duties, including post handling, filing and answering the phone.
* Assist in enrolment procedures and other administrative tasks as required.
* Maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
* Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent
* Working towards a recognised accounting qualification desirable
* Experience of accounting functions and accounts preparation desirable
* Experience using computerised accounting systems desirable
* Strong Microsoft Excel skills
* High levels of accuracy and attention to detail
