Overview
Hardware Engineering Manager (Electronics) – Based in Glasgow; Hybrid working. 3 days per week on Glasgow site, with option for hybrid office/remote work. Thales UK designs and delivers electronics for defence and security platforms across land, sea and air. The Hardware Engineering Manager is a leadership role responsible for the execution of a comprehensive set of engineering tasks, ensuring adherence to cost, schedule, performance and quality commitments, and for the design and development of products that comply with regulatory safety and environmental standards.
Responsibilities
* Define and manage the hardware development cycle, ensuring alignment with project and system requirements and co-engineering activities; ensure work carried out by the team follows company processes.
* Customize the hardware engineering environment (processes, practices, tools) to meet project needs.
* Allocate tasks within the team; manage day-to-day activity, plan and prioritise work, and negotiate between projects as necessary.
* Participate in system architecture development and allocate functions to hardware components; generate electronics specifications, architectures and development or verification plans; define functions and interfaces of hardware products.
* Occasionally undertake Work Package Manager responsibilities, lead bids and estimates, and provide consultancy on electronic solutions.
* Provide technical direction to manage risks and drive fault-finding activities, investigations, reviews and improvement projects.
* Engage with a multi-disciplinary team to develop optimum solutions.
* Contribute to the development of the wider Electronics team, mentor junior staff, propose improvements and review peers’ work; deliver high-quality development discussions.
Essential Qualifications And Skills
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
* Proven experience in hardware development and engineering management.
* Strong understanding of hardware life cycle processes from requirements to verification and validation.
* Excellent leadership and team management skills; ability to tailor engineering environments to project needs.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to drive innovative technical solutions through design lifecycle with delivery on cost, schedule and quality.
* Experience in electronics circuit design using schematic capture packages (Cadence, Mentor Graphics or similar).
* Experience across the product lifecycle from bid/concept to system integration/qualification and support.
* Ability to challenge the norm and influence electronics design approaches.
* Experience advising and auditing activities across multiple projects and resources.; ability to introduce innovative technologies and ensure adoption within the team.
* Contribution to defining policies and guidelines for the business unit or department.
Desirable Attributes
* Product knowledge of lasers and cameras is advantageous.
* Continuous learning mindset; up-to-date with advancements in electronics engineering.
* Knowledge of the Chorus 2.0 Design, Develop and Qualify the Solution (Hardware) Process Lifecycle, or ISO9001-compliant engineering management system.
* Level 6 Qualification in a hardware engineering discipline (e.g., BEng(Hons) Electronics).

The role is based at the Thales site in Glasgow. While a significant portion of work may be done remotely, attendance on site is required for test, integration and lab-based work. We support flexible working patterns to fit lifestyle needs.
