Role Description
The Data Protection Officer is responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining key components of the Data Governance Framework, including policies and standards aligned with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act. The role supports the evolution of the Data Strategy, ensuring effective data sharing, data quality, assurance and enablement across the organisation.
Working closely with business areas responsible for data assets, the role drives improved value from data, embedding governance practices that treat data as a strategic asset. The advisor acts as a subject matter expert on data governance and protection, leading forums, managing risks and ensuring compliance while promoting a data‑driven culture across a large, complex organisation.
Responsibilities
* Develop and maintain key elements of the Data Governance Framework, ensuring alignment with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act.
* Collaborate with business areas to define, implement and continuously improve the Data Strategy.
* Enhance the value and usability of core data assets through improved governance, quality, and enablement practices.
* Lead and facilitate data governance forums and working groups, ensuring clear accountability, audit trails and effective risk management.
* Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in data governance practices aligned to industry best practice.
* Design and deliver communications, roadshows and engagement activities to drive organisation‑wide adoption of data governance principles.
* Establish and support data stewardship roles, ensuring clear ownership and accountability for key data assets.
* Define and monitor data governance performance indicators and quality metrics to ensure compliance with policies and standards.
* Act as the subject matter expert for data governance, supporting business areas in resolving issues and mitigating data risks.
* Produce high‑quality reports and communications for senior stakeholders including the CEO and CFO.
Qualifications
* A Certified Data Protection Officer certified by PECB or BCS Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection or IBITGQ Certified.
* Strong understanding of UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act and government data regulations.
* Proven experience in designing and implementing data governance frameworks within large, complex organisations.
* Deep knowledge of data quality, data protection, data security and information management best practice.
* Experience of working with enterprise data assets, data standards and data integrity frameworks.
* Ability to engage, influence and build relationships across diverse business and technical stakeholders.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex data governance concepts into clear, actionable messaging.
* Experience of establishing and supporting data stewardship models and communities of practice.
* Demonstrable ability to lead governance forums, manage risks and ensure clear auditability of decisions.
* Experience in defining and tracking data governance metrics and performance indicators.
* A proactive approach to continuous improvement, with awareness of emerging trends in data governance and protection.
