Men’s Senior Specialist Coach: Scrum
WRU National Centre of Excellence – Full time, Fixed‑term contract (35 hrs per week). Fee: Competitive. Closing Date: 5 May 2026.
Overview
As part of WRU’s ambition to return Welsh Rugby to the top of the international game, this role is responsible for developing and delivering an elite‑level scrum identity for the Men’s Senior Team, while influencing player development across professional clubs. The Coach will lead the scrum philosophy, deliver coaching, develop players, contribute to selection, planning and performance, and support the Head Coach and broader performance team.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop a clear and comprehensive scrum philosophy for the Men’s Senior Team and the wider pathways, aligned with the overall game model.
* Design and implement a detailed scrum style, principles, technical details, systems and game solutions, including scrum systems, individual positional profiles and technical requirements.
* Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team (medical, strength & conditioning, psychology, match officials) to maximise effectiveness of training and practice design.
* Analyse and incorporate current referee trends and interpretation as they apply to the scrum.
* Develop a comprehensive and evidence‑based scrum DNA – a clear language and terminology aligned to the Welsh Rugby DNA.
* Create a curriculum for scrummaging development in partnership with other pathway coaches.
* Support research and development programs to deepen understanding of scrum technical and tactical details.
* Deliver on‑ and off‑field coaching and learning using a variety of styles to meet diverse player needs.
* Support the Head Coach in developing a clear vision and ‘what it takes to win’ model for the Men’s Senior Team.
* Co‑create an outstanding performance and development culture for players and staff both in and out of camp.
* Assist in the selection of Men’s Senior Team squads in alignment with the Welsh DNA.
* Develop operational plans for cycles, seasons, campaigns and events (training camps, matches, tournaments).
* Provide comprehensive session, week, campaign and season review information and material within the Plan‑Do‑Review‑Evolve philosophy.
* Collaborate with the multidisciplinary support team, ensuring alignment across WRU.
* Co‑coach identified players at professional clubs, ensuring development to world‑class standards.
* Maintain individual development plans for Men’s Senior International players.
* Engage in coaching, selection and development activities for the Welsh international pathway.
* Provide support to WRU coach development activities on an agreed number of occasions per year.
* Maintain professional development to keep knowledge and practice at the highest level.
* Act as an exemplary role model and ambassador for the WRU, representing the team in media and communications.
* Participate in marketing and sponsorship activities as required.
Qualifications and Experience
* Level 3 Rugby coaching licence or recognised equivalent (ongoing annual WRU Coach recognition programme).
* Demonstrable scrum coaching experience in club and/or international rugby with a strong track record of success.
* Exceptional on‑ and off‑field delivery using a variety of methods and approaches.
* Experience identifying, managing and developing talent, with a focus on young players.
* Experience contributing to a high‑performing, positive team culture.
* Understanding of detailed performance planning for short, medium and long‑term goals.
* A growth mindset and evidence of continued professional development.
* Experience using data and measurement processes to inform and accelerate coaching.
* Good links and the ability to develop relationships with club staff and stakeholders.
* Understanding and belief in a long‑term developmental DNA for Welsh Rugby.
* Commitment to live in Wales and be present full‑time.
* Proficient in basic technology for self‑sufficient coaching and analysis.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Desirable: Welsh language speaker, valid UK driver’s licence.
* Basic/enhanced DBS check required.
