Job Summary
The NHS Blood & Transplant Components Development Laboratory is an internationally recognised facility conducting research and development to enhance blood component quality and safety for transfusion. From June 2014, the laboratory will be located at NHSBT-Cambridge, on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
The post holder, reporting to a senior laboratory scientist, will perform technical and scientific activities including preparing reagents, calibrating and operating machinery, monitoring results, managing stock, and handling clinical waste. Good communication skills are essential for supporting and training less experienced staff and contributing to laboratory meetings.
Main duties of the job
1. Perform scientific and technical activities related to blood and tissue donations, supporting the team.
2. Contribute to the Testing Development Laboratory through evaluation, validation, troubleshooting, equipment management, and housekeeping.
3. Support and train new and less experienced staff.
4. Carry out precise repetitive tasks involving equipment and blood samples.
5. Handle blood bags and laboratory equipment.
6. Work variable hours including weekends and bank holidays as per departmental roster.
7. Manually handle equipment weighing up to 13 kg with appropriate training.

Experience
* Supervising others.
* Working with Information Technology such as Microsoft Office.
Qualifications
* Level 4 qualification (e.g., BTEC, HNC) in a relevant science subject, NHSBT Foundation Degree, or equivalent knowledge and experience.
* Evidence of personal development and willingness for further training.
