Job Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join The Christie's Clinical Outcomes and Data Unit (CODU) as a Data Scientist. You will work with the team and colleagues across the Trust to improve patient outcomes through the robust selection, analysis, and visualisation of data to support clinical and operational decision making. In this role you will support data quality improvement, utilising NLP and machine learning methods to prepare the way for developments aligning with Future Christie aims, and collaborate with analysts, data scientists and statisticians on projects with stakeholders throughout the Christie.


Main duties of the job

* Support clinicians, researchers and non‑clinical staff in performing statistical analysis and producing data models.
* Use data and technical analysis to extract insight for clinical and operational purposes, identifying solutions and recommending process and business rule improvements.
* Interpret statistical results and explain them, verbally and in writing, so that non‑statisticians can understand.
* Advise on appropriate techniques for data analysis and interpretation; guide analysts on feasibility of data science and statistical work.
* Identify and recommend improvements in reporting, software or other systems to enhance performance or data accuracy.
* Utilise exploratory data science techniques to extract usable insights and communicate recommendations through clear visualisations.
* Stay up‑to‑date with various modelling techniques and advise on optimal choices.
* Ensure selected techniques remain fit for purpose through ongoing monitoring and robust data pipelines.
* Plan own workload and projects appropriately.
* Test own work and peer‑review team members’ work.
* Support the learning of team colleagues and mentor junior team members.
* Create and maintain documentation on analysis undertaken for CODU projects.
* Carry out any other duties commensurate with the post and grade that may be requested by the Lead Data Scientist.


Communication and Relationships

* Communicate professionally with senior clinicians and service managers, using appropriate clinical terminology.
* Represent CODU and Digital Services at internal and external meetings, reporting on progress.
* Advise, support and lead on reporting at appropriate directorate, divisional and Trust level meetings.
* Act as a point of contact for CODU, managing queries, problems, requests and incidents, ensuring they are logged and tracked.
* Lead, manage and resolve assigned tasks efficiently and professionally, conforming to Trust procedures and working practices.


Knowledge, Training and Experience

* Research and understand complex, multi‑departmental clinical data flows and apply specialty‑specific data knowledge.
* Utilise software to produce data insight tools using appropriate analytical techniques.
* Maintain exceptional attention to detail and deliver high‑quality new processes.
* Collaborate with teams in digital services (software development, data engineering) to understand cross‑over work streams.
* Support the performance management and income teams, having awareness of NHS financial and performance reporting.
* Adapt products to reflect changes in working practices and stakeholder expectations.


Analytical

* Apply statistical and analytical knowledge to critically appraise and challenge output results, ensuring only meaningful information is delivered to stakeholders.

* Act as an ambassador for CODU, maintaining excellent working relationships with users across the organisation.
* Lead in the development and maintenance of a culture of service provision and continuous improvement.
* Implement policies and propose changes in line with legislation and NHS policies, including ITIL, Data Protection Act and information security.
* Participate in information governance and security, ensuring appropriate governance in own area.
* Apply change management, monitor documentation, and support RCA for incidents and problems.


Responsibility – Staff/HR/leadership training

* Line manage own team, deploying resources efficiently.
* Provide regular performance reports on progress and achievements.
* Support staff development through personal development reviews.


Responsibility – Finance and physical

* Safely use ICT hardware and software.
* Monitor maintenance and support contracts, liaising with suppliers for value‑for‑money contracts.
* Liaise with external agencies, ensure delivery aligns with contracts.
* Support business appraisals and business case production with Trust stakeholders.
* Follow Trust procurement processes and assist in procurement documentation.
* Ensure adherence to Trust Standing Financial Instructions and procurement guidelines.


Project Management

* Advise and participate in the development and implementation of projects.
* Ensure project tasks are delivered on time and within budget.
* Support project boards and teams, presenting to all levels of staff.
* Deliver project documentation and reports to agreed standards.


Business Continuity Management

* Develop, exercise and review business continuity plans.
* Conduct business impact analysis to identify critical processes.
* Familiarise with the Trust Business Continuity Plan and personal responsibilities.

Person Specification – Essential

* Programming experience in Python, R, Stata or similar.
* Experience developing machine‑learning tools for insights and recommendations.
* Experience using statistical techniques to extract insights.
* Experience working with analytical professionals and senior managers in a multidisciplinary environment.
* Experience managing NHS or academic information.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
* Postgraduate qualification in an analytical/statistics/data science discipline.
* Strong communication skills – verbal, written, presentational, interpersonal.
* Good organisational, time‑management and record‑keeping skills.
* Ability to meet deadlines, prioritise and manage workload in a changing environment.
* Flexible, positive, resilient, methodical, team‑player.
* Experience of managing multiple tasks successfully.


Person Specification – Desirable

* Professional statistician/data scientist experience.
* Experience in a healthcare setting.
* Experience of documenting results for publication.
* Master’s degree in an analytical/statistics/data science discipline.
* Knowledge of hospital services, NHS commissioning, oncology, NHS England strategies.
* Knowledge of population‑based statistics and research methodologies.
