Job Description:
NHS HIGHLAND
Consultant in Emergency Medicine
This is an excellent opportunity to work in the capital of the Highlands with a great team and live in an area of outstanding natural beauty with a high quality of life. NHS Highland wishes to appoint an additional Consultant in Emergency Medicine to maintain the quality of the service, and to support the scheduling of unscheduled care. The post is offered on a full time basis of 10 Programmed Activities per week.
This new post will bring us up to 11 consultants (9.75 WTE), with an on-call commitment of 1 in 10.7 (subject to change). A business case for further consultant expansion to meet increasing demand on the service and to meet RCEM sustainable staffing recommendations has additionally been submitted.
This post is based in Raigmore Hospital, which is the principal Emergency Department in the Highlands providing services to Inverness and the wider Highland region, covering over 10,000 square miles and a population of 320,000. Our annual attendance is over 42,000.
We have a diverse case mix across all age ranges and presentations. We are a regional Trauma Unit, with ARI being our Major Trauma Centre, however due to geography we receive a significant amount of major trauma patients to Raigmore.
Our Emergency Department has a 4-bedded resuscitation area, 2 decontamination rooms, 13 treatment and examination rooms, and a co-located ED minors area, largely staffed by advanced nurse practitioners. We have dedicated paediatric waiting and treatment rooms, a dedicated ED seminar room and staff room. There is 24/7 access to CT, supported in the out of hours period by outsourced radiology. We have good friendly working relationships with other services across Highland and beyond.
The primary care ‘out-of-hours’ service is closely located with good collaborative working relations.
