A vacancy has arisen for a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and hardworking team within the Microbiology department at Barnsley Hospital, which is part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network.
We are seeking a highly motivated, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with a flexible approach to work. Participation in the out-of-hours service is a mandatory requirement once competency is achieved in all relevant areas.
Applicants must possess an IBMS-accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, have relevant experience in a Microbiology laboratory, and hold current HCPC registration (Band 5/Band 6 BMS). Ideally, candidates will have completed the IBMS Specialist diploma (Band 6 BMS) or be prepared for assessment.
We will consider applicants without a specialist portfolio or extensive experience if no suitable Band 6 applications are received. In such cases, we would appoint to AFC Band 5.
Please note that this vacancy is banded based on the applicant's experience relevant to the role. The starting band for the successful applicant will be Band 5 unless the applicant meets the necessary skills and experience to start at Band 6.
Key Responsibilities
1. Carry out complex analytical and processing procedures.
2. Ensure accurate and timely laboratory testing.
3. Maintain high scientific and technical standards.
4. Promote and uphold high standards of education and training.
5. Adhere to all Trust, SYBP, and Departmental policies.
6. Perform a range of microbiological methodologies including bacteriology, serology, parasitology, mycology, and molecular techniques using current media and analyzers.
7. Develop specialist Microbiology knowledge for interpreting complex patient investigations.
8. Develop manual dexterity skills for accurate processing and analysis.
9. Interpret clinical information for pathogen detection and identification.
10. Interpret pathogen antibiotic sensitivities to guide patient treatment.
11. Plan workload effectively to ensure section productivity.
12. Focus during extended analysis periods.
13. Work within Biological Safety Level 3 laboratories, adhering to safety protocols.
14. Assist in specialized areas such as Quality, Health and Safety, Internal Quality Control, and Audit training.
