Associate Director – Building Surveying (Consultancy)
Location: Manchester (Head Office)
Working pattern: Hybrid (office, site and home)
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience plus package
The Opportunity
This is a professional building and property consultancy delivering advisory, surveying and compliance-led services across a varied UK client base. The role sits within a consultancy environment focused on technical expertise, governance and trusted client advice, rather than delivery-only services.
We are seeking an Associate Director level Building Surveyor to join the Manchester head office and play a senior role in the leadership, commercial growth and ongoing development of the Building Surveying function.
This is a commercially focused appointment suited to someone already operating at Associate or Associate Director level, or a Senior Building Surveyor who is clearly performing at Associate level in responsibility and influence.
Role Overview
The Associate Director will operate as a senior consultant within the business, acting as a trusted advisor to clients and a leader within the internal team. The role carries clear responsibility for growing existing client accounts, developing new client relationships and contributing to the overall commercial performance of the consultancy.
Alongside technical oversight and governance, the successful candidate will be expected to actively support business development, strengthen client relationships and help expand the consultancy’s presence in the region.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and oversee professional building surveying instructions across commercial and residential portfolios.
Act as the primary client contact on key accounts, building long-term relationships and expanding the scope of services delivered.
Actively grow existing client accounts through trusted advisory relationships and cross-service collaboration.
Support and contribute to new business generation, including identifying opportunities, supporting bids and converting instructions.
Manage, mentor and develop Building Surveyors and Senior Building Surveyors, setting standards and direction rather than providing delivery support.
Oversee quality assurance, technical governance and risk management across projects.
Provide senior oversight on core services including dilapidations, technical due diligence, defect analysis, contract administration and advisory reporting.
Contribute to business planning, workload forecasting and resourcing within the Manchester team.
Work closely with senior leadership to help shape the commercial strategy and growth of the consultancy.
Required Experience and Background
MRICS Chartered Building Surveyor status is required.
Proven experience operating within a consultancy environment, ideally at Associate or Associate Director level.
Demonstrable experience in growing client accounts and supporting new business generation.
Strong commercial awareness, including responsibility for fees, margins and client relationships.
Leadership experience, including line management, mentoring and team oversight.
Ability to operate autonomously and represent the consultancy confidently with senior clients.
