PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £46,000 - £56,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join the Aggregated Metadata Platform (AMP) at the BBC.
AMP integrates multiple scheduling and reporting systems to provide a single view of our entire programme catalogue. From when a programme is first commissioned through production, publication and archive, AMP ensures that the metadata associated with the programme is available to those who need it in an accessible and reliable form. The team is also responsible for delivery of Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) data to Freeview, Freesat, Sky, as well as reporting of music usages and various other insights.
This year we will work on many interesting challenges, some of which are:
· Enriching the metadata for our content to provide better insights and aid in content discovery, to unlock more value for our iPlayer and Sounds audiences.
· Modernising our direct feeds of Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) to Sky, Freeview and Freesat.
· Building a new accessible front end application for BBC staff to query our metadata APIs.
· Playing a key role in the facilitation and support of large audience-facing BBC output (such as Football World Cup, Wimbledon, Eurovision).
· Supporting BBC’s key objective to stay relevant and continue to provide great value for all, by moving to a Digital First approach.
The team are hybrid working (approx. 1 day in office per week) and are predominantly located in the Glasgow and Cardiff offices.

We are a team that likes to work collaboratively, often through pairing. We like practices such as Kanban, Test-Driven Development and Continuous Deployment but, more importantly, we like continuous improvement - we embrace change.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
As with any role, we would expect you to take some time getting up to speed with our business area, technical landscape and team practices.
You will be working in a cross-discipline team, collaborating with the Team Lead, Product Manager, Business Analysts and other Engineers to delivery quality software.
Over your first year, your focus and responsibilities will grow and develop. In the first 3 months you might be:
· Learning the schedule and programme metadata business domain that encompasses almost all of our projects.
· Getting up to speed with our AWS microservice & serverless architecture across our existing projects.
· Getting hands-on and pairing on development tickets, taking part in architecture reviews, ticket refinement sessions and retrospectives.
At 3-6 months (and beyond) you might be:
· Taking technical ownership of units of work, and providing valued input into design, planning and estimation sessions.
· Mentoring and supporting our team of developers.
· Learning new technologies and keeping abreast of existing technologies.
Beyond these responsibilities you will have time to focus on self-development, through Innovation Time (10%) and extensive training opportunities (via the BBC Academy).
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Most of our development is in building back end systems and APIs, using Java, deployed to AWS cloud. You would ideally be experienced in these areas. However, if you have similar relevant experience, and you feel that we can all learn from each other, then we’d like to hear from you.
A small amount of work may also be in front end (Typescript/React), so any experience would be useful but not essential.
Essential criteria:
- Java with Spring / Springboot framework
- AWS Cloud
- SQL and NoSQL databases
- CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins or similiar).
- Collaborating with other developers
Desired but not required:
- Experience in some of the following Java frameworks: Micronaut, Hibernate, Junit, Mockito
- Experience in some of the following AWS services: i.e. Lambda, EC2, SNS, SQS, S3, DynamoDB, RDS, CDK, CloudFormation
- Some Front End development experience, i.e. React/Javascript/Typescript
Interview Process
Candidates will be invited to a remote, 2-hour interview with a diverse panel which includes the hiring manager and other engineers in the team.
The interview will be split into 2 sessions with a small break between. The panel will be 2-3 members for each session.
The first session is Technical where we will ask you to give us an overview of a recent system/application you have played a significant role in (with a pre-prepared diagram or diagrams), followed by some technical role specific questions for you to demonstrate applicable knowledge and experience.
The second session is Competency and Values based. With Competency you will be able to demonstrate key strengths in professional software development (such as best practice, handling failures, and conflicts). The Values questions let you demonstrate your values and behaviours that align with those of the BBC (such as creativity, inclusion and pride).
