An exciting opportunity has arisen to undertake the role of the Guardian of Safe Working for Resident Doctors at NBT.
This role is responsible for the delivery of safe working hours for Resident doctors as outlined in the 2016 Terms and Conditions of Employment set out by NHS Employers which contributes to the maintenance of patient safety.
The post holder will be accountable to the Trust Board providing regular reports on issues relating to compliance and safe working. They will also form close working relationships with the Director of Postgraduate Medical Education and PGME team to ensure that the educational element of the contract is met.
Main duties of the job
The successful post holder will be a senior medic, independent of the management structure within the organisation for which Resident Doctors are working and by which they are employed. The guardian is responsible for protecting the safeguards outlined in the Terms and Conditions of Service for NHS Doctors and Dentists in Training 2016. The guardian will ensure that issues of compliance with safe working are addressed, as they arise, with the doctor and/or employer, as appropriate; and will provide assurance to the Trust board that Resident Doctors working hours are safe.
Working for our organisation
Whilst the postholder will work independently from Trust management, they will be an integral part of the Chief Medical Officer's team. The role will form part of the successful candidates job plan and they can carry out the role flexibly as agreed with their Clinical Lead / Clinical Director.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The guardian is responsible for protecting the safeguards outlined in the Terms and Conditions of Service for NHS Doctors and Dentists in Training 2016. The guardian will ensure that issues of compliance with safe working are addressed, as they arise, with the doctor and/or employer, as appropriate; and will provide assurance to the Trust board that Resident Doctors working hours are safe.
Act as the champion of safe working hours for doctors in approved training programmes and Locally Employed Doctors. They will ensure that action is taken to ensure that the working hours within the trust are safe.
They will record and monitor compliance with the restrictions on working hours stipulated in the TCS 2016, through receipt and review of all exception reports in respect of safe working hours.
Ensure that exception reports regarding training hours, as set out in work schedules, are sent to the DME or equivalent officer.
Escalate issues concerning working hours raised in exception reports to the relevant Divisional Clinical Director where these have not been addressed at a local level.
Directly receive exception reports where there are immediate or serious risks to safety and ensure that the organisation at a local level has addressed these concerns that led to the exception report. Where this is not addressed within the timescales identified in Schedule 5, and the guardian deems it appropriate, the guardian will raise this with the executive of the employing and/or host organisation.

* Experience in a senior clinical, medical education, or workforce governance role
* Good knowledge of the 2016 Terms and Conditions of Service for NHS Doctors and Dentists in Training, and NHS England workforce education
