Contract Type: Full-Time, Term-Time Only
Salary: Competitive, depending on experience
Start Date: Immediate or next academic term

School Overview

This forward-thinking Primary and Nursery School in Islington is renowned for its inclusive and nurturing environment. The school serves a vibrant North London community and prioritises emotional wellbeing, early intervention, and behaviour support across its Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1 classes.

The school leadership understands that behaviour challenges often arise from unmet emotional, social, or developmental needs, particularly in early years. To address this, the school has implemented a comprehensive pastoral and SEND framework, designed to support children, staff, and families. Due to increasing pupil demand for targeted behaviour support, the school is seeking an experienced and compassionate Behaviour Mentor to join its team.

Role Purpose

The Behaviour Mentor will provide vital support to pupils who struggle with emotional regulation, behaviour management, social interaction, or learning engagement. Pupils may present with SEMH needs, ASD, ADHD, attachment-related difficulties, or developmental delays.

You will work directly with children both in classrooms and through structured interventions. By providing consistent, nurturing support, you will help pupils develop self-confidence, emotional literacy, and positive behaviours, while working collaboratively with teachers, EYFS staff, SENCO, and pastoral teams.

Key Responsibilities

* Deliver 1:1 behavioural and emotional support to children requiring additional intervention

* Facilitate small group programmes to develop social, emotional, and self-regulation skills

* Support pupils within Nursery and classroom environments

* Assist with transitions, routines, and managing changes during the school day

* Support behaviour during unstructured periods including playtimes and lunchtimes

* Implement, monitor, and review individual behaviour support plans

* Use play-based, restorative, and trauma-informed strategies

* Work collaboratively with teachers, EYFS staff, SENCO, and pastoral teams

* Observe, assess, and record pupil progress and interventions

* Contribute to planning, review meetings, and reporting

* Develop positive relationships with parents and carers, offering guidance and support

* Promote safeguarding and child protection in all aspects of practice

* Encourage a culture of inclusion, empathy, and respect across the school

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be emotionally intelligent, patient, and resilient, with a strong passion for supporting young children. You will be able to identify the underlying causes of challenging behaviour and respond with empathy, consistency, and positive reinforcement.

The candidate should demonstrate:

* Experience in Primary, Nursery, or EYFS settings

* Knowledge of SEND, SEMH, and trauma-informed practice

* Strong behaviour management skills and ability to implement interventions effectively

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

* Emotional resilience and ability to manage challenging situations professionally

* Reflective practice and a proactive, solutions-focused approach

Relevant qualifications in childcare, education, psychology, or mental health are advantageous.

Training and Professional Development

The school provides structured induction, supervision, and ongoing professional development. Behaviour Mentors are encouraged to undertake training in SEMH, SEND, early intervention, and trauma-informed approaches. The role also offers clear progression into teaching, SEN, or pastoral leadership roles.

What the School Offers

* A supportive and inclusive working environment

* Collaborative and approachable leadership

* Access to high-quality CPD and specialist training

* Opportunities to make a real difference to pupils' lives

* Long-term employment prospects and career development

Safeguarding

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All appointments are subject to enhanced DBS checks, references, and safer recruitment procedures.
