The role will work across both North Lincolnshire and East Riding of Yorkshire Councils.
About the Role
As a Trading Standards Enforcement Practitioner, you will play a key role in enforcing laws related to the sale of tobacco and vaping products, ensuring compliance with regulations, and protecting consumers, particularly young people from illegal and unsafe practices.
This position is ideal for individuals looking to build their career in Trading Standards, providing hands-on experience and structured training through the Trading Standards professional apprenticeship. You will develop expertise in enforcement, conduct inspections, investigate complaints, analysis of intelligence and work closely with businesses to achieve compliance.
About the candidate:
We’re looking for individuals who are eligible for the Trading Standards professional apprenticeship and demonstrate:
• GCSE-level English and Maths (Grade C/4 or above), or willingness to achieve this during the apprenticeship
• Strong attention to detail, numeracy, and organisational skills
• Proficiency in IT (especially Microsoft Office)
• Excellent communication and customer service abilities
• Awareness of criminal law and health & safety
• Ability to interpret legislation and technical information
• Capability to work independently and within a team
• Competence in using relevant equipment
• Ability to travel across North Lincolnshire and East Riding of Yorkshire
Employment details:
You will be employed full-time by North Lincolnshire Council, but this position is distinct as it involves responsibilities across two local authorities: North Lincolnshire Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
Your work schedule will be divided as follows:
40% (2 days per week) dedicated to North Lincolnshire Council,
40% (2 days per week) for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and
20% (1 day per week) focused on apprenticeship training.
Candidates must demonstrate flexibility to accommodate the apprenticeship requirements and the needs of both councils.
Your main work base will be Church Square House, Scunthorpe, DN15 6NL but will be required to travel to East Riding of Yorkshire, Trading Standards and Calibration Building two days per week. You will also be required to travel for training occasionally.
For your role with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, you will be based at the Trading Standards and Calibration building on the outskirts of Hull (HU6 9DX).
Training and career opportunities
You will benefit from the commitment of both North Lincolnshire and East Riding to provide your in-house training, giving you access to a wide range of experienced officers who have a track record of training new team members across all Trading Standards functions.
This government-funded role is part of a national initiative to develop future Trading Standards Officers. Although fixed-term until 31 March 2029, it offers valuable skills and experience to support a long-term career in the profession.
You’ll be expected to start the Level 6 apprenticeship within two months of joining. Both councils are committed to your development, providing in-house training and access to experienced officers across all areas of Trading Standards.
