Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments from our Executive Board through to support functions such as Group Design and Technical, HR, Health and Safety, IT, Sales and Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat. We also have a specialised function – Barratt Partnerships. While the work varies from team to team, our key requirements don’t: you must be well organised, extremely helpful and resourceful, and able to use your initiative. You’ll understand that what you do is important, and impacts on your team, the department, and the wider business.
The Group Legal and Compliance (GLCT) function of Barratt Developments plc
based in Coalville, Leicestershire, is run by a progressive and innovative Head of Legal who is committed to developing a dynamic legal support function. The team is primed to meet the existing, and future, needs of the business.
The role is to support the Regulatory, Construction and Disputes Team.
You would also play a fundamental part in shaping the future success of the Group Legal function as it moves into a new world of proactive and innovative legal advice and support for the business.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Manage a broad spectrum of legal work, including reviewing, drafting, negotiating and advising on a variety of legal agreements, mainly property and construction contracts.
2. Review, draft, and negotiate terms of appointment for architects and other consultants, as well as negotiations involving contractors under large package agreements or other design & build contracts.
3. Provide guidance and advice to the business (including the Executive/Board) on legal issues affecting the house building sector, including compliance and regulatory matters.
4. Offer advice on construction litigation matters such as Terminations, Pay Less Notices, and Adjudications, including managing external lawyers’ input where appropriate.
5. Supervise and train junior lawyers within the team.
6. Contribute to shaping and delivering the future strategy of the Group Legal Team, including implementing tailored training programs for the wider business.
7. Collaborate with senior lawyers and the Group Head of Legal on complex and strategic projects.
What you'll need:
1. At least 8 years PQE.
2. A motivated, energised, and confident character with a “can do” approach.
3. Commercial mindset.
4. Ability to balance risk with the group’s overall objectives.
5. Private practice training is essential.
6. In-house experience is helpful but not mandatory.
7. Ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently.
8. Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
9. Excellent organisational, multi-tasking, and drafting skills.
10. Proficiency in word processing and IT skills.
11. Willingness to design and deliver internal training on construction contracts.
